When he was a schoolboy Liu Cixin’s favourite book was Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. This might seem like a fairly standard introduction to science fiction but Liu read it under exceptional circumstances; this was at the height of the Cultural Revolution in his native China and all western literature was strictly forbidden.

Now 53 Liu (western publishers present him as Cixin Liu to make it easier for readers to find his family name on the shelves) is a science-fiction writer of some renown both in China and in the English-speaking world. His novel The Three-Body Problem won a Hugo award in 2015 and is currently being adapted into a movie due in 2017. His sequel The Dark Forest was published in English in 2015 and the third book Death’s End has just been translated and released in the UK.

His first novel The Devil’s Bricks came out in 2002 but it wasn’t until 2006 that he had his breakthrough The Three-Body Problem.
Initially serialised in the Chinese magazine Science Fiction World the novel takes its title from a physics question in orbital mechanics and contains three intertwining plots set respectively during 1971 in the Cultural Revolution in the mid-2000s and on a distant world in a three-sun system.

The success of Liu’s novel is credited with inspiring a new surge in sci-fi writing; in 2012 alone nearly 200 new titles were published in China.

I loved this trilogy. While reading it I was profoundly aware I was reading a novel by an author whose background and cultural references were utterly different from mine and I loved that too. There is a constant bait-and-switch going through these books - especially the second - which meant I kept flipping from cosmic scale and back again.
It's made me go looking for more Chinese SF too.

'...in 2012 alone nearly 200 new titles were published in China...'
I hope many of them were adult and mature SCI FI literature not as in the Western world full of nonsense and outdated fantasies...
I dont know where lies the dystopia here or there...

I'm especially interested in "Frankenstien" theories. Thanks again.

Interesting article. Could someone point me in the right direction towards a science fiction writer that isn't too overboard super scientific or too unbelievable? Someone who writes good SF lite if you will. I'm new here. Thanks.

Give Chris Beckett a try. His short story collection The Turing Test is very accessible and contains the story that is a prequel to his novel Dark Eden although the novel stands on its own if you'd rather start with that. His writing style is clear unpretentious and delivers a new spin on familiar SF ideas.
As a general rule anyone who's won the Arthur C Clarke award is worth a read as that tends to go to readable SF (based on the ones that I've read at least).

Thanks so much for that.

SF lite - the red rising series by pierce brown. Hugely enjoyable romp. Fans of hard sci fi will scoff but ignore them. Second and third books much much better than the first.

The Three Body Problem is really first-rate SF. Some of the most imaginative and memorable writing I've read in many years. Looking forward to reading the third volume.

Love the trilogy felt the most different fresh body of work I'd read in some time - the sharp prose the difference in setting/focus and suchlike. I preferred TBP and Death's End to Dark Forest not by much mind you - I think that's in good part due to Ken Liu's excellent translations.
Hopefully this will mean SFF in translation will become much easier to find.

So I think Chinese SF right now is in such an interesting and unique place. Ken Liu has also edited a collection called "Invisible Planets: Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction in Translation" which is absolutely well worth a read to get a broad grasp of the scene. It's a fantastic collection of a range of SF pieces. Hao Jingfang's "Folding Beijing" is a stand-out.

Isn't China already in dystopian sci-fi reality?

shanshuitianqi  RainyDayCarts 2d ago
You didn't read the article did you. The featured author mentions foreigners like you who mistake China for dystopia already.

The Dark Forest trilogy is superb hard SF and is a reminder why the genre can be so much fun at its best. The density and range of ideas and tropes generally well handled in these books is very impressive and spans politics social psychology game theory catastrophe astrophysics time travel the end of the world the end of the universe amongst others. The characters are put in a succession of seemingly impossible situations of escalating difficulty and the way that these are managed on individual and procedural levels is often unexpected.

If these works fail to provide a vision of a Chinese future overseen by a benevolent CCP they'll be banned. How burgeoning can that scene be?

Alex42  Gordomania 2d ago
"Burgeoning" does seem a bit strong when the only Chinese SF works mentioned in the article are three books by one author.4

You might be surprised - there's quite a bit of it about in China now. Not a lot of it gets translated into English though.

What's it most similar to would you say? I'm a fan of hard SF but I'm always wary of starting trilogies if I'm not pretty sure I'm going to enjoy them!

Arthur Sternom  Alex42 2d ago
I would say it is similarish to a Peter F Hamilton trilogy but a bit harsher and with less of the outre psychedelia. Imagine a bit of William Gibson mixed in.

Keep going. I agree about the third installment but it ends up in about the only way something so grand can do.

I loved the first two and bashed through the third.
