"China and other countries may be creating a 5G tsunami, making it near impossible to catch up," a report from the consultancy said.

China has in recent years outspent the U.S. by $24 billion in the area of next-generation mobile internet technology known as 5G, potentially creating a "tsunami" that will be difficult to catch up with, according to a Deloitte study published Tuesday.

China can benefit from 5G more than us because of their urban population density. For average mobile users in the US, 4G LTE is adequate. There will be applications, mostly in machine to machine communications, that can benefit from 5G, and this is what will drive 5G. These applications are still in research stages. We don't have a pressing need for 5G yet. We have to keep in mind the difference in population. Just because China has 1 billion smartphones doesn't mean we need 1 billion smartphones in order to catch up with China.
