A Gambian goalkeeper who dreamed of playing football in Europe drowned trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya, it emerged last night.

Fatim Jawara, 19, is believed to have been on board a ship that was hit by a storm on the treacherous crossing to Italy last week.
