Dental floss is kind of a luxury considering good dental hygiene is a product of a first-world living standard. Mouthwash is just a product of marketing; it actually makes your breath worse after it wears off because the alcohol dries your mouth out.

I agree that it's not promoted as much here in mainland China but not that it is a "luxury". I can find it much more easily in other developing countries than here. Strangely the dental floss picks I used to find here frequently. The dental floss here (like many other things) is mostly cheap unwaxed and falls apart when you use it. No wonder most people don't like it.
I'm sure I could find better stuff on Taobao but thanks OP for reminding me that I need to buy some on my trip to HK next week.

I always prepare an herb-mint FRESH MINT mouthwash which I take for 1 minute while I continue the rest of my morning routine. Washes always with little or no alcohol because alcohol dries your mouth out and makes you smell older.

alcohol can kill some bacteria. if your breath stinks because your mouth is dried out then drink some water.

What about the alcohol killing the bacteria? And it also probably depends on how bad your breath smelt before using it. I don't use it often but if I'm hungover or have eaten a ton of garlic/other smelly foods I'll use mouthwash and I swear it makes things better even several hours later.

Not so.
Refined sugars dissolve quickly and are rinsed away. They are also not the primary cause of bad breath.
Starches (especially things such as potato chips) are far worse in terms of tooth decay. This is because the starchy foods tend to stick in the teeth and it takes far longer for them to break down into simple sugars that can be washed away.
Periodontal disease (which is where most of your problems occur) comes from a combination of things but smoking and complex foods (meet and vegetables) caught in the teeth are primary among them.

This what I don’t get. There are so many “simple” things in China that people could just look up. Everyone’s attached to their smartphones but they don’t floss their teeth because of reasons that don’t make sense if you look them up.

Mouthwash gives a weird breath smell. If you have a mouth ulcer it definitely helps for a quick recovery but daily not sure if it's good.
Dental floss however yeah it's quite good to improve on bad breath issues. An other simple thing for avoiding bad mouth smell is a tongue cleaner.

Depends on old they are. But I'd be surprise if they never heard 2 out of 3 of those terms.

Nope you're wrong. He's not retarded he's completely typical in my experience. That's what people here do all the time; they work very hard to avoid being cognizant of things around them.
I'm in Guangzhou so cold weather gloves are not common even for people on mopeds and e-bikes. When this happened I was wearing lightweight gloves while we were playing frisbee outside. The conversation went something like this.
