What is the bug situation like in China (specifically Chengdu)? Are apartments infested with roaches? What about other insects like spiders caterpillars flys etc. I have an irrational fear of bugs and I was wondering how I'd fare. I'm more specifically talking about bugs like caterpillars or beetles or cicadas. They creep me out 1000x more than a cockroach. Any big insect that flies is the death of me.

Do any of you guys get huge thousand-leggers in your apartments? It's not an everyday thing but I still hate it. I'm sitting on the toilet when all of the sudden I catch a glimpse of this lizard-sized beast slixing as fast as a taxi out of the corner of my eye. It disappears behind my sink and next thing I know this demonic creature is charging full-speed toward my feet looking like it just stepped out of a time portal from the Jurassic period.

You mean centipedes? I got bitten once by a 7 cm long one that had crawled into my paper bag with a French baguette (Is Carrefour still a thing in China?). Reached in to grab the bread suddenly a stinging sensation. Pull my hand out a huge centipede is hanging from my hand by its pincers. Cue mindless uncoordinated flailing and reaching for obxts to smash it with but obviously the centipede just laughed and taxied out of sight - to somewhere inside my bedroom! Never saw it again though.
The further south you go the bigger they get too. I was in Wuhan at the time so fairly central. Down in Guangdong they can get twice as long or more I heard.

Yes house centipedes. We call them thousand leggers where I'm from. I'm very cautious moving around and sitting down and picking things up in my apartment just due to the potential threat of their existence. You never know where they might strike - I even killed one on a train once.

I just moved into a new apartment and I've yet to see them inside yet but the other night I shined my phone flashlight toward the grass outside the building out of curiousity when I saw something big skitter across the ground. It was a not-so-fun-sized house centipede. All I can say is... Winter is coming.

Yeah they are - but if you see one then that kind of means you also have roaches or other bugs! And they are also horrifying looking things I agree.

just rent newer apartments in high-rises. Don't live in 2-3 floors with trees in your sight.

Not in Chengdu but I've hardly ever seen any spiders. Cockroaches and mosquitos are the big issue down south. No matter how many holes you block off cockroaches always find a way in somehow. Seem to have it mostly under control in my place now with a combination of traps spray and sealing up every little hole I can find. Still get the occaisional one but they're small. When I first moved in they were everywhere and some of them massive. You say they don't bother you but some cockroaches are huge really fast and sometimes can fly. You'll also see them in restaurants which is off putting. Other insects aren't a big deal in the city I've seen grasshoppers giant wasp like things grasshoppers but they're not very common. There'll be flies around fruit and meat. Out in the wild though anything goes.

我不在成都，但是我也很少看到蜘蛛。蟑螂和蚊子在中国南方很常见。不管你把家里的缝隙堵得多严实，蟑螂总是有办法钻进来。在小强陷阱、杀虫喷雾以及封堵住任何缝隙等多种措施齐下的情况下，我住的地方的蟑螂疫情基本受控了。偶尔还是能看到，不过都是很小的那种。我刚搬进来的时候，到处都是蟑螂，有些还体型巨大。你可以说蟑螂不会主动来咬你，但是有些蟑螂个头好大，跑起来又快，有时候甚至还能飞。有时你在饭店也能看到蟑螂，让人看着就恶心。其他的虫子在城市里倒不多见了，我看到过蚂蚱、大黄蜂一类的虫子，但是并不常见。卖水果和肉食的地方会有苍蝇飞来绕去。在城市以外的田野里，那就什么虫子都有了。

Not inside though. Gotta be real fucking careful walking around in the countryside though. They're not dangerous but it's the stuff of nightmares walking unsuspecting into one of those giant webs with 3-4 huge spiders in them.

Yeaaah I was walking under some trees when a rainstorm hit. One of those things fell onto my wife's head. Real freaky. I'm in Fujian now with huge flying roaches galore.

I'm terrified of insects too. On top of that I'm a mosquito magnet. I've lived in Dalian for five months and have surprisingly only encountered a couple of insects in my apartment. One was a beetle and one was a moth. No spiders roaches or caterpillars so far. A cicada did fly directly into my neck the other day as I was walking outside which freaked me out.

I prefer hot places to cold but choose cold places to teach English in because the insect situation is usually better.

I wonder why insects are so terrifying to some of us. I can understand something like a snake evolutionary but not really an insect. You would think it would be a culture thing since some cultures eat insects but I feel that my fear is both innate and deeply rooted. The absolute worst I think are beetles.

I’m in Chongqing which is pretty close by though maybe a bit wetter which might have an impact. Cicadas are everywhere in the trees and my apartments kitchen has a cockroach problem due to all the corners and spaces under the counters that we can’t reach to clean. Luckily most of them are the small kind. The Raid brand cockroach traps we bought at the supermarket were pretty good at killing them. Mosquitos are bad near stagnant water basically the same as back home. No black flies like in rural Canada which is a small mercy.

In my experience you will see a roach every now and then no matter where you live. I keep my apartment very clean and occasionally encounter them. There's nothing you can do when the residents just put their garbage out in the hallway.

以我的经验判断。不论你住在哪都会碰到蟑螂的。 我把公寓打扫得干干净净然而还是偶尔能看到蟑螂。楼里的住户都把垃圾放在楼道里了，所以你采取什么措施也没用。

I can stand the cockroaches but I once found one of those Asian hornet building a nest in my bathroom one morning. I did beat the fucker with a newspaper so it bounced into the wall and closed the bathroom door real quick but it did survive hitting it a few more times as hard as I can and it was still there building the nest not giving a flying fuck. Bought some bug spray and sprayed right at it and still nothing sprayed more times + hitting it and finally found it dead on the floor after a whole day of intense battle.

蟑螂我倒是能忍，但是有天早上我发现有亚洲大黄蜂在我的洗手间里筑了个巢。 我用报纸拍它丫的，结果它就钻进门和墙之间的缝里，我马上就把门关上，还是没碾死它。接着我又用报纸狠狠拍了好几下，结果这货就是赖着不飞走，继续筑巢。我又去买了杀虫剂回来，直接朝它喷，它竟然没事。我继续连喷带拍，终于发现它掉在地上死透了，我整整跟它战斗了一天啊。
