Japan on Thursday unveiled its first stealth fighter jet, officials said, with the maiden test flight planned for next month.

The defence ministry's acquisition agency showed off the domestically developed, radar-dodging X-2 fighter at a regional airport near the central city of Komaki.

Its first flight is scheduled in mid-February before delivery to the defence ministry by the end of March next year, the acquisition agency said.

The X-2, developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, measures 14.2 metres (47 feet) long and 9.1 metres wide and was built as a successor to the F-2 fighter jets developed jointly with the United States.

X-2是由三菱重工研发，长14.2米，宽9.1米，该机为与美国共同研发的F-2喷气式战斗机的后续机型。

Presently, only the United States, Russia and China have been internationally recognised as having successfully developed and flown manned stealth jets, the agency said.

Well, it's going to employ about 20000 - 25000 folks in Japan; plus cut payments to the US for US aircraft that are derated ( not all the stuff in the US versions is exported). Japan is just looking to its own economic interests; with a slightly different twist than the US regarding quality control. As well as Japan showing regional concern and taking their fate into their own hands.
Like the song's lyrics - "Everybody wants to rule the world" ; or at least their portion of it.

First domestically produced passenger jet since WW2? Mitsubishi MU-2 is not a jet but a turbo prop passenger plane that appears to seat at least a dozen people. US maintenance hangars are at Tulsa International Airport. Pretty sure Mitsubishi never stopped making aircraft, and the MU-2 was built in Japan??

The Japanese are very closely tied to America in technology, both military and civil. The only other country as closely ties with America is Canada. The cutting edge weaponry and government sponsored projects such as the F-117 when first developed used technology from this group along with later project like the Rapture, Spirit, and even the nuclear deep bunker-busting bombs. This is nothing new and it benefits all. This fighter if the clams are accrete will be a supplement to the Rapture and Joint strike fighter.

I worked at Lockheed during the manufacture of the F-2, F-16 and new F-22. You can bet some technology flowed from the company to Japan to ease their design costs. And so what makes a plane stealthy? Most important, the 'coatings', better known as paint. Super secret. And of course, a few other things...

As a result of her defeat in WWII, Japan was prohibited from manufacturing heavy weapons like fighter-jets. What happened? US now needs to enlist Japanese brains against China?
