I used to go to the Ikea in Shanghai all the time. Mostly to hit their buffet. I did in fact see Chinese people sleeping in the beds and treating the place like it was a hotel.

Was there yesterday and overheard a kid ask her mom why IKEA doesn't open a hotel. Smart kid.

and make people pay for it? nobody would go then

[In recent months middle-aged singles have taken to congregating in a Shanghai ikea in such numbers that management has been forced to cordon off a designated “match-making corner.” Shen Jinhua an ikea employee told the Shanghai Daily “Before we set up an isolated area for them they occupied the seats in the dining area for a long time and thus other guests could not find a seat.”]
Actually they have since banned the practice.

[If there is another place in Shanghai where elderly people can gather we are more than ready to pay twice as much and travel further.”]
Isn't that what the parks are for?

Lame they all have their pants on.
It's not Chinese Ikea until you've seen a pantless Ayi getting kicked out of the demo beds.
pilchard436 12 points·1 day ago
If you were to eat at Ikea go early or fairly late. A lot of old people will just sit there and enjoy the free air conditioning and don’t order anything and talk Obnoxiously loud.. This is Shanghai Xuhui Ikea.
specofdust 5 points·18 hours ago
Why don't they kick them out? You only need to be nice to paying customers when they actually pay.

Honestly I have no idea.

Family cards entitle you to free coffee so you're kind of a "customer". Honestly that kind of stuff works here in Sweden where people have too much shame to game the system. I can imagine it going haywire elsewhere...

People are ridiculous going there and just napping on the test furniture with their shoes on like they own the place... Is this even comfortable to do so? It's noisy and very bright. This isn't your appartement there are plenty of coffee shops malls restaurants parks where you can hang out. Until these people get called out nothing will change. It's 2018 there is no excuse anymore for this kind of behavior

I wonder what's up with "face" in these situations.

Face doesn’t apply much in situations involving strangers here. You’ll see people arguing loudly with girlfriends in the street behave like farmers and care not the slightest about the people around them. The face concept doesn’t apply when it’s random people you don’t know whom you’ll never meet again. It’s part of the general problem regarding lack of social conscience.

Yeah they don't give a shit about "the others". I wonder why the Japanese are so similar in many ways to Chinese but in this particular issue they're the opposite. They care about every human being around them queue properly and have a broad concept of social conscience. This is all related to "face"in Japan. Many times face is just hypocrisy I guess that's why the Japanese suicide rate is so high while in China people have room to release stress through outrageous conduct.

When I first moved to China I went to IKEA to get some stuff for my new apartment.
Never saw so many people inside an IKEA store. Also never saw so many people NOT SHOPPING inside an IKEA just laying down in the beds and sofa like it was their own house and just enjoying A/C. From that date on I've avoided IKEA ever since.

The place seems to be treated more like a theme park/'experience day' than a shop. This took Ikea by surprise but they pretty much have to roll with it and just find ways to capitalise on the huge number of visitors as best they can since a lot of them won't actually be buying furniture.

The Chinese ability to nap is pretty impressive. Any reason why in general there seem to be so many people taking so many naps in so many random-ass places?
hapigood 5 points·19 hours ago
Napping is encouraged in primary schools after lunch unlike sports or having a walk or doing an activity like I guess you had. And given the method of instruction probably necessary.
This continues through university to the workplace. Walk around an office at 12.30pm and not see people napping? If no one's napping there's a policy against it that's being enforced.

The Ikea in China is mellow. The guy on the background is adhered to the coach.
