屠洪刚 -《精忠报国》 [美国媒体]

Many people inthe west believe that Chinese are in general motivated by an irrationalnationalism cultivated by the communist party to secure its political hold onthe country. This is why some of the protests by Chinese nationals overseashave been labeled as "rebirth of the red guards". Personally, I thinkthis misunderstanding reflects a lack of knowledge about Chinese history, whichin the thousand years past have been filled with foreign invasions and civilwars. We Chinese are peace lovers, but our own history has taught us thatunification as a country, especially in the face of foreign threats has alwaysbeen the prerequisite for a peaceful life.
This musicvideo is by the singer Tu HongGang, who was trained as a Beijing opera singer,but turned into a pop singer in the late 80's and early 90's. The song isentitled 精忠报国, whichtranslates to 'dedication and loyalty to the country,' or 'serve the countrywith the utmost loyalty.' The phrase by itself originates from the story of YueFei, "a famous Chinese patriot and military general who fought for theSouthern Song Dynasty against the Jurchen armies of the Jin Dynasty. Since hispolitical execution by the traitor Qin Hui, Yue Fei has evolved into thestandard model of loyalty in Chinese culture." According to legends, hismother tattooed these four characters across his back before he left home tojoin the army in 1122. The fourcharacters on his banner say, Huan Wo He Shan , or "Give back my riversand mountains". I love the song (and the singer!) very much, I feel itechoes much of the patriotism which Chinese holds as part of our culturalidentity. What I am saying here is basically soldiers dont have todie for unworthy commanders. Look almost all the Great Chinese emperors ledtheir troops from the front. he should have set up his own dynasty.the jurchens werepushed pretty much to their breaking point. yue fei should not have returned tothe capital... instead he should have drove the jurchens further back. thenturning his eyes on southern song, he could have easily founded his ownkingdom.... the difference is that of a hero's death or a villains death....butyes he's dead anyways .so the point is moot.
