Unlimited food for guests of honour: the Chinese show love and respect by providing unlimited food to friends, family, and guests of honour.
There have been several times in Hong Kong and Mainland China when I had the privilege of dining with government officials as a VIP, even once in the Great Hall of the People (人民大会堂), which purportedly has some of the worst food among the big official venues. Well, I can’t tell. It was amazing. And it was way too much food.
Usually at these functions, there is not enough time to finish the meals anyway. And it’s not like we can “win” either — if you somehow finish everything on the table, they will bring more food… because in Chinese culture, if the guests finish the food, that means the hosts failed to provide adequate amount of food.
Therefore, the hosts will always ensure there is food left on the table.
Family banquets and those with close friends are OK, we can bag it to go. But can’t do that at an official VIP banquet. Sometimes (no joke) I have nightmares of wasted food.
My family taught me to never waste food. My parents and grandparents had to beg for food when living through China’s Century of Humiliation. I eat every single piece of food on my plate, not because I’m poor (don’t worry, I’m not), but because I respect the food, I respect the chef, and I respect the farmers.

I don’t like wasting food either, but surely it’s in the farmers’ interest for us to waste food. After all, that drives up the price of food, which means more profit for them.

我也不喜欢浪费食物，但是浪费食物其实是有利于农民的。毕竟，那会提高粮食价格，意味他们能获得更多利润。

You might be right, but it will be unjustified towards the poor. They are starving, yet some part of the population is wasting food - something which is very wrong. It’s ironic to see how a random kid starves for the entire day while others throws food from a restaurant 10 km away.

你说得对，但那对穷人来说是不公平的。他们在饿肚子，可是某些人却在浪费食物，这是非常错误的。一个孩子饿了一整天，而10公里外的一家餐馆的人们却在浪费食物，这很讽刺。

I don’t understand how not wasting food is good for the farmers. If society didn’t waste such copious amounts of food, wouldn’t they then buy less food, and in turn, hurt the farmers?

我不明白为什么不浪费食物对农民来说是好事。如果社会不浪费这么多食物，那购买量不是少了吗，这样不是伤害到农民了吗？
