I'm moving to Taipei soon after two years having lived in Beijing. What are the important cultural differences and customs to be made aware of between these cities?

You can assume that the food is safe to eat;

你可以认为食物是安全的；

You don't have to ask yourself"Where is this person from, and why is he asking what he's asking?" when you have a conversation;

当你和别人交流时你不用问自己“这人从哪里冒出来的，为什么他要作出这样的请求？”；

When you are buying something, you no longer need to assume that someone may be trying to cheat you.

当你购买某个东西时，你没必要设想某人想要欺骗你；

When you buy lamb kebabs, you no longer need to assume that it may be rat meat;

当你买羊肉串时，你不再需要设想那可能是老鼠肉；



When you need to renew your visa or get your work permit, you actually are treated in a friendly manner, and may even make small talk with the people helping you.

当你需要更新签证或者获得工作许可时，你会受到友好对待，甚至可以和帮助你的人聊天一会。

You don't need to wear a mask because the air is clean, but if you want to, no one will bother you.

你没必要戴口罩，因为空气很干净，但是你要戴的话，也没人会管你。

There is much less energy in Taipei, and there is not a buzz in the air as in Beijing;

台北的活力更少，不像北京那么热闹。

Showing off bling is actually considered tacky in some social circles;

Yes, culturally this is a different China from the China that I had known and going there after ignoring it for so many years felt like I had made a great mistake.

OK. I will admit that these are impressions of a tourist and that I am comparing it to my impressions of China as a resident. That is not fair. Yet..., given an opportunity, I would love to spend a few years living in Taipei.
