India is now home to the world’s tallest statue.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally presented the massive 600-foot Statue of Unity, which depicts the so-called Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on Wednesday.

The incredible statue is twice the size of the Statue of Liberty ― or nearly four times larger if you don’t include Liberty’s pedestal ― and overlooks the Narmada River in the western state of Gujarat, where the independence leader was born.

Before becoming India’s first deputy prime minister, Patel was inspired by the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, leading him to organize a nonviolent civil disobedience movement against British colonialism.

“Patel took charge of the task to forge a united India from the 565 semi-autonomous princely states and British-era colonial provinces. Using frank diplomacy backed with the option (and the use) of military action, Patel’s leadership enabled the accession of almost every princely state,” a website dedicated to the statue and Patel’s life reads.

The statue is the first crowd-funded monument in modern India, according to the website. The New York Times reports that it cost $400 million.

The statue is made of iron from former farming supplies and soil from villages across the country to ensure “that Indians from all walks of life get a chance to actively participate in the construction of this icon of national unity, in most of the ways possible,” according to the Statue of Unity website.

The outrage apparently did little to dampen the spirits of India’s prime minister, however.

“Every Indian will be proud of the fact that the world’s tallest statue is now in India. Sardar Patel, the man connected with the land, will now adorn the sky,” Modi said Sunday. “I am sure every Indian will take pride in telling the world about this great accomplishment.”

On the banks of the Narmada stands the majestic statue of a great man, who devoted his entire life towards nation building.

How many microloans to help local farmers and merchants start their businesses could $400 million have done? In a nation where the average income is $7,200 per year? Does coercion which "Iron Man" used in his era, work now? Even "local tribal leaders objected to the statue and said they would boycott its dedication." An expensive cold piece of metal does not bring about a people united - any more than the Statute of Liberty welcomes caravans in 2018.

I read that India needs like 50,000,000 toilets so gigantic statue might be the secondary thing to direct resources to.

Vanity project for the living at the expense of the Indian people that Patel loved so much.

Imagine how many people you could lift from poverty/treat for medical conditions with the money they spent on that. I'm sure upkeep is going to cost a pretty penny.

I'm not sure how anyone in India feels about this statue. But for what this cost to build wouldn't the money went to better uses. And knowing another is going to be built in Mumbai. Seems a waste of money.

As an Indian I find the comments quite funny. Majority of the comments are from those who get their knowledge about India from watching Apu from Simpsons. If the high school dropouts could read they would have known that the World Bank just released TODAY a report on Ease of Doing Business where India's ranking went up from 100 to now 77, a jump of 23 places in just a year. In 2016 India's ranking was 143, a jump of 66 places in last two years. India also boasts the fastest growing economy in the world at 8% a year, India's GDP increases by $300 Billion every year, they can afford to spend $400 million on a statue. India has lifted 800 million people out of poverty in the last 2 decades alone.

All the countries sending foreign aid to India should take notice and reconsider their contributions

what a waste of funds...could have built a first rate university with that kind of money and honored him by naming it after him...
