What was your scariest travel experience?

In college, my sister and I were taking a night train from Madrid to Nice when 3 drunk Portuguese guys came on and started robbing everyone. They were going up each car and emptying purses and pockets. When they got to us we had planned to say we were poor and backpacking and had no money, but it was not well translated by the thieves. They skipped us though, and didn't really protest our position.

I was in VIII standard when our school took us on a tour to Mumbai.
It was an enjoyable trip all together. Only while returning did the horrid incident happen.
We were travelling in train, it was night and I was sleeping on the side upper berth with my friend sleeping on the lower one.
The whole bogie was full with students and teachers from my school and it was silent and dark.
Suddenly, while in my sleep, I felt a hand grab my breast. I was awake immediately and shoved that hand away and sat upright looking around trying to find out who groped me.
I sat that way for good 5mins startled as I was not able to find a single person around who would do it. Everyone was asleep.
Then I saw a man stand up from the lower berth. It was our sports teacher who had hid himself. He had probably assumed that I fell asleep back again and so got up from the seat only to find me awake looking accusingly at him.
He started making excuses trying to cover up for his presence there, like your bedsheet is falling, fans are making too much of noise etc.
Then he went away telling me to go back to sleep.
After that I woke my friend up and shifted on her berth to sleep because I was scared.

So I thought, what the hell - I was pretty buzzed and feeling confident. I had no Portuguese, but was fairly fluent in Spanish, which was pretty similar after all. And wouldn’t most cab drivers know a little Spanish anyway? I mean this WAS, after all, South America!
So I soon approached a driver at a cab stand and, using some sign language plus my Spanish and what little Portuguese I knew, was able to convey my desire to the driver. He did not seem phased in the slightest and offered me to hop into his cab - he would take me there!
I had no idea where “there” would be, no idea who we would talk to when we got there, no idea who would do the deal, nor any idea how much it would cost. I tried to suss this out with him as we sped off in his car, leaving every one of my friends in his rear view mirror.
But suddenly the driver didn’t have any Spanish anymore. And pretty soon we were headed uphill. Up, up and further up, winding through dirty streets that soon became just plain dirt. On all sides were shoddy huts made of tin and wood and blocks, with fires burning in barrels and stray dogs running wild and all sorts of disheveled locals wandering around, none failing to peer into the cab. We were clearly quite a curiosity there, and it dawned on me that we had ascended into the fabled and fearsome favelas (slums) that towered above the sea-level majesty of the city below.
I waited in the cab for maybe fifteen minutes. I was half-drunk, but becoming increasingly scared as time went by. What if someone pulled me out of the car? What if the driver didn’t come back? What if one of these mangy dogs started barking at me, attracting more attention? It was not a fun wait I endured there.
At length, the driver came back out of the shanty, laughing animatedly and performing some kind of samba jig. He had a bottle of some type of liquor, and took a mighty swig of it in the driver’s seat, then offered it back to me. I accepted and took a swig too, and it was some type of cheap rum that he probably could have used to run his cab. But I swallowed it down without expression, and the driver sped off.
Did he have our pot? I asked him that question in Spanish, and he simply didn’t answer. He grabbed the bottle back from me and took another swig, and just kept driving - uphill. Oh shit, I thought. Why aren’t we we returning to the beach? I asked him that in Spanish, and he looked at me in his rear view mirror. That glance was the only reply he gave me.
About three minutes later, he pulled up next to a girl about my age, and chatted to herb through his window in Portuguese. She looked at me in the back and asked him something about me, pointing me out with a nod of her head. The driver just shrugged at her. After maybe five seconds of looking at the driver and looking at me, she walked around the hood of the car and climbed in next to him.
Now, at last, the driver turned the cab around and finally started back down the hill. I didn’t even dare to ask about the pot. I didn’t ask anything at all, and as if to fill the silence, the driver started humming The Girl From Ipanema. Like maybe this was the entertainment portion of the journey I had paid for.
He stopped twice more on the long, and this time much faster, ride down the hill out of the favela. Both times that he stopped, he offered a man to hop in his car, and they each did lines of coke. Neither of the men who hopped into the cab even looked at me, though both times the driver offered me the tray again, in case I had changed my mind. I definitely hadn’t.
At last, we departed the favela, and the driver simply returned to the same taxi stand he had been waiting in when I first approached him.
Ok, he said. And that was that.
I got the fuck out of his car and ran headlong to the same beach I had left maybe a half hour before.
Obviously I had failed in my mission, and quite possibly had been lucky for the ride back to my starting point. I suddenly started wondering how to convey all this to my group of friends, who were still gathered on the beach, and still laughing and drinking like we had been before.

This incident happened to me in December 2015, when I visited Paris (World's most beautiful city). But it turns out to be a bad experience for me. This trip was my first solo trip abroad. I was very excited and planned so many things.
On the first day itself I've seen one of the darker side of Paris which is theft from tourists.
After taking a train towards city center from international airport CDG in Paris, I reached at the station named City Universtaire. Then I had to take a tram to reach near to the hotel.
So I enquired with the people nearby about the route I should follow or in which direction should I take the tram. After few attempts I got the answer and was standing at the station waiting for the next tram. I skipped boarding the tram 3 or 4 times as there were so many people trying to board the tram (it was peak hour i.e. 9 a.m.).
But at last I decided to board the tram and pushed myself in with all my luggage. I stood near the door facing towards it. The tram was full, there was no space to move or adjust the luggage.
Then just after few seconds I felt that someone is pulling something from my front pocket (I had my wallet and mobile phone in it). I checked my pocket and it was my phone which was stolen.

I had to flee a foreign country in the middle of the night, under threat of police.
When I was a child (12), my family went with my mother to Hungary, where she was speaking at a medical conference in Budapest. It was toward the end of the Cold War, and Budapest was still part of the Eastern Bloc. We had to file a travel itinerary with the police, indicating when we were entering and planning to leave, where we were staying, the reasons for our visit, and any plans we had to travel outside the city.
The conference organizers had prepaid all of the hotel fees, and my mom had brought with her printed confirmations of the wire transfers, etc in case we ran into issues. The first hint of a problem came when we checked in, and the hotel said we needed to pay. Mom brought out all of her paperwork, explained that she was prepaid, and we checked in.

Akshaya, Life is electric
A few years back I went to Europe as part of my work. I went to Germany to be exact. At that time, I was staying near Hamburg, but had a friend in Koln(Cologne). So I thought a weekend visit would be fun. Koln was just 6 to 7 hours away from Hamburg. Mind you, I was new to Germany hence didn't understand one word of German language. So I reach koln and then spend a very happy fun filled weekend with my friend, and when returning I had to catch a bus which was located half way across the city from where my friend stayed.
As we both were girls I thought it wasn't safe for her to drop me off that late in the night, and also there was a local bus which took me directly to my required stop. So keeping all this in mind, we parted ways Hugging Goodbye.
Then comes my Hero in the form of Google Maps. Since I was new I always followed maps to know if I'm going in the right direction or not. So I enlarge the Map and I see a Polizei - Police station on the way. I never felt so happy in my life. So I took the root where the police station was located and when I came in front of it. I just turned back and shouted at the drunk guy saying "I CALL POLICE." Immediately he utters some swear words I guess, don't know and couldn't understand but turns around and boards another bus going in the opposite direction and was gone.
I won, and I was safe. I was so happy, words cannot express my happiness. Finally I could see that my bus is there waiting for me, cause due to all this ruckus issues, I was 10 mins late. Fortunately the driver knew good English, so I told him my situation and why I was late. He assured me I would be safe in the bus, and loaded my luggage in and off I was back to my home in Hamburg safe and sound.
Still today I can remember the drunk guys face, scary as hell.

My friend stated that the man said we should buy two drinks for the women, and that if we bought a bottle they would do a dance. I asked the girl and she looked perplexed and said "you vant dancing before?" it doesnt take a genius to realise she was a prostitiute not a stripper.
Not only was she a prostitute, but she was clearly a drugged up one with slurred speech and so was her friend. I also realised that this was some covered up brothel and the barman was a pimp. And I remembered Brothels and pimping was ILLEGAL in the country. I looked around and the seedy place was full of people with scarred faces, middle aged, they all seemed to know each other and there was one tattooed guy in the front with a gun jutting out of his jeans. A gun. They looked like Russian gangsters or something. I asked the girls where they were from and it turned out to be Ukraine. I whispered to my friends about what Id discovered and my friend said they could possibly be smuggled in.
We all just got up slowly so as not to attract attention and the barman smiling blocked us at the door saying "80 euros my friends" . My mind obviously immediately went for what?! but this clearly wasn't the place to start arguing over extortion. We all gave 20 euros each and my friend said "oh we're 20 euros short" and tried to laugh it off. The barman stopped smiling, counted the money and pressed his palm against my friends chest. Ill never forget this moment as the whole bar just went dead. The music stopped, everyone started looking at us and the tattooed guy stood up and walked over. I thought we were dead. Rationality escaped my mind, I now think no way they wouldnt kill 3 tourists over 20 euros would they? The risk is so much higher than the reward no?. But then he walked up closed fists and I expected at the least to be beaten .
I vividly remember our driver complaining about it as he wasn’t really into it.
The bus was moving.
I was holding the bus handle (I don’t know if it’s the right word to use) in front of me with both of my hands. I was smiling. I whispered into my uncle’s ears saying that I wanted to eat Lays, but he didn’t understand. He said “huh?” while leaning in close to me.
The driver hit the brake. And the next thing I know is my nose hurt so bad, I felt like some parts were dislocated. I cried really hard. I’m not sure whether I hit the back of the seats in front of me or his face, but it did hurt really bad. I remember it vividly, but it feels like I still feel the pain.
It was sudden. He consoled me saying it was okay and stuff.
We were told to get off the bus.
Actually the other bus suddenly stopped in front of ours and our bus hit the back of the other bus. The front glass of our bus was all gone, the back glass of the other bus was all gone.
I had just wiped off my tears. When I got off, I saw a girl and she caught my attention because she looked my age.

I was molested by a man on my 18th birthday.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I am a male, and was molested by another male.
It was my 18th birth and I was on my way back from college to home. It was around 6:30 in the morning when I boarded the train. Owing to non-availability of seat, I had to stand near the door of the coach. I man, looked like in his 40s, came and stood by me, saying that even he did not get any seat for sitting.
We had formal conversation after which he offered me tea, which I readily accepted owing to the chilly weather. After that, we were just standing near the gate with our hands in pockets. It was then that the man rubbed his hands (which were still in his pockets) over my private part. The first time, I thought it was accidental. But when he continued it for the second and third time, I got furious.

Happened in Delhi
This technically did not happen while travelling, because I was going from Delhi to Udaipur and it happened in Delhi. Specifically, it happened while I was going to the bus stand. It was 6 in the evening during the Delhi winters and it was starting to get dark. I got an auto to drop me off at Dhaula Kuan, which is about an hour's drive. I was not that scared. I had been on this road before and I knew it by heart. Add that to the fact that I am fat and ugly, and look like a guy, I did not have anything to worry about. (I know I should not be stereotyping, but in reality, it works, or so I thought).
The ride started normally, and I casually asked the driver how long it would take, which turned into a conversation about where I was going and so on. I had no trouble with that casual conversation. Half an hour in, we stop at a busy road side and the driver disappears. But since the road was busy, I paid no attention.
After some time, he got in, and I could see that he had unzipped his pants. That was the time I actually became scared. I pretended to call someone and tell them casually that I was in an auto numbered XXXX and would reach in 20 minutes and would call then.

The plane had just left San Francisco, it was a mild, summery afternoon, and suddenly the pilot announced there was a bomb on board the plane.
I was sitting in coach, in the very front row of seats. I was tired, I had worked all morning and was now flying home to see my family for a few days.
Everyone in the cabin seemed unnaturally hushed; even the air felt too warm, old and tired.
The pilot came on the intercom and announced that someone had called and said there was a bomb planted on board. I could literally feel the sudden adrenaline surge all around me. We would be doing an emergency landing back in San Francisco. Immediately. The flight attendants nervously instructed us all in how to go into a crash position; leaning over in our seats as far as we could, while staying seat-belted in tightly. The flight attendants’ hands and voices shook, betraying their outward calm.
What goes through one’s mind at a time like this? Leaning over, I turned my head sideways and caught the eye of a young businessman sitting opposite me two rows back. Our eyes locked.
We waited many hours, refreshments were served at one point. And then finally, finally we were all given new tickets to board another plane. We were led into the main terminal, but it all still seemed surreal somehow.
I will never forget it, or the exact moment my eyes locked onto a stranger’s eyes and we experienced a small lifetime together in seconds.
