Well. Lots of people are wondering about Xi’s bizarre speech and what it means. Or rather the lack of a speech. Xi was late to the ceremony and declared the bridge open.
Weird…..
The big thing is that it saves time by reducing transfer. The time it takes to cross the bridge isn’t that much less than by ferry. The difference is that now you have to take a bus to Shueng Wan, take a ferry to Macau, then switch again to a bus.
With the bridge, you can go from city center to city center. I think the biggest users of the bridge will be Macau casinos running shuttle buses to Hong Kong, or Disney running shuttles to Macau. The fact that you can now do a “package” transport system where someone buys one ticket to go across is possible where it wasn’t before.

The bridge, together with the high speed train had connected Hong Kong to the rest of China. Now, travel to China is not limited by plane or transfer train from Lowo. Hong Kong had became an assessable city in China’s railway and highway map.
The infrastructure had revealed the strategic development plan of south China region. The areas connected all can compliment each others on resources they need. In order to do so, Hong Kong need more land and more people, that’s why the CEO of HK proposed to reclaim land at east Lantau area for CBD3. In the future, Hong Kong will need to house at least 10mil population.
There are a lot of negative comments against these mega infrastucture plans, however, if you are familiar with Hong Kong, you will notice that only the opponent’s view got chances to be published by the media, the silent majority never have a chance to voice out their support.

​So going to Macau and Zhuhai will be much quicker especially on days when weather is bad for ferries. This might actually promote the use of Zhuhai airport. I do not have the data of the traveling time from Hong Kong airport to Zhuhai airport. I think it would be around 1.5 hours. With the saturation of the Hong Kong airport, people might like to use Zhuhai to take long haul flights if the fares are attractive, as Zhuhai airport is very under utilized at the moment. Most probably in future there will be Hong Kong people living in Hong Kong and working in Macau and Zhuhai. Lantau will be quickly developed into a more populated area, which a lot of environmentalists will be against again.

预期是天气不好不适合渡轮开动的时候开车去澳门和珠海就方便多了。这可能还能提升珠海机场的使用。我不知道从香港机场去珠海机场要多久。应该是一个半小时。香港机场已经饱和,如果票价合理,人们可能愿意去珠海机场乘坐长途航班,因为珠海机场目前而言被使用的程度太低了。未来很有可能人们会居住在香港,然后去澳门和珠海上班。大屿山很快将被开发成人口更多的区域,很多环保人士又要抗议了。
