For years Michael Jordan has taken criticism from those who’d wished one of the most famous visible wealthy and powerful athletes in the world would use his considerable public profile and influence to speak out on social issues affecting the African American community. For years the six-time NBA champion and basketball legend’s legacy of on-court success has been counterbalanced by four non-quoted words — “Republicans buy sneakers too” — often used to call Jordan onto the carpet for failing “to embrace the leverage he possessed as the nation’s most iconic athlete across the 1990s.”

Well now the Hall of Famer and Charlotte Hornets owner has chosen to speak.

In an essay for The Undefeated published Monday the 53-year-old Jordan makes his voice heard in the wake of the recent unrest in the country following the police killing of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge La. the police killing of Philando Castile in Falcon Heights Minn. the killing of five police officers by a lone gunman at an otherwise peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas the police shooting of North Miami behavioral therapist Charles Kinsey as he lay on his back with his hands thrust in the air trying to coax an autistic patient back into a mental health center and all the protests and demonstrations that have followed.

With persistent issues of racism violence against African Americans police brutality and gun violence coming to the forefront for many NBA and WNBA players of late Jordan decided that “as a proud American a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence and a black man […] deeply troubled” by the deaths on both sides of the divide the time was now for him to speak and to act:

“I was raised by parents who taught me to love and respect people regardless of their race or background so I am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late. I know this country is better than that and I can no longer stay silent. We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers — who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all — are respected and supported.

“Over the past three decades I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family. I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service. I also recognize that for many people of color their experiences with law enforcement have been different than mine. I have decided to speak out in the hope that we can come together as Americans and through peaceful dialogue and education achieve constructive change.

“To support that effort I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Institute for Community-Police Relations’ policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing. My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund the nation’s oldest civil rights law organization will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement. Although I know these contributions alone are not enough to solve the problem I hope the resources will help both organizations make a positive difference.”

With precious few exceptions the run away majority of people shot by police were both criminals and had it coming. But this number shot by police pales in comparison to the numbers of people shot and killed by violent criminal Blacks. Far more of those Black victims were actual innocents as compared to police shootings. The Black community in the U.S. can cry whine and #$%$ about racism all day long but none of it will changed the fact that the biggest racists in America today are Blacks and the the people who kill the most Blacks today both guilty and innocent are other Blacks. I'll conclude these facts with two more. Jordan was overrated and that his better was and always will be Larry Bird on the basketball court.

I lived in a mostly black neighborhood for about 15 years. The 4 houses next to mine and the three across from me all had live in boyfriends some smoking pot around young black and Hispanic kids. None went to work and all lived off the kids moms money and food stamps. The most successful families were Asian and one successful Hispanic family who were devout Catholics. Asians establish businesses and use family members(immediate and cousins uncles aunts) and they all get along whereas blacks can't work it out mostly fighting each other. I think black lives have been destroyed by many years of bad policies by Democrats in mostly large cities in America($50 extra for each child born out of wedlock and no father was supposed to be in the house). Democrats are evil-now the new policy in about 300 cities is to declare them sanctuary cities for illegals-lawlessness and teaching immorality by breaking laws of the US.

He means well but giving money to lawyers is a waste. Money is not going to solve the issues. It is the lack of respect for other humans that is the cause. I grew up in Gary IN - white woman and my father had a business in Gary for many years and we were taught to respect everyone.

Gun control issue he carried a gun to work every day and when he came home he put it on the fireplace in the living room and there were 6 kids in our family and friends over all the time and no one touched that gun.

My brother is a retired police officer from NW Indiana and I am glad he retired. A officer was shot (black) in his patrol car after getting a DV call and an hour later a person in the neighborhood call 911 and reported he hadn't moved in an hour and they should send someone to check it out.

I love how people are defending the lives of these criminals. These repeat offenders not based on the type of people they were or as to their character but solely on their skin color. They were all resistant in the moment carrying a weapon and breaking the law. You are fighting for criminals . CRIMINALS! thats not to say I agree with any type of police brutality or intimidation but we arent talking about innocent law abiding citizens here. It was so easy to make this about race though. Pathetic.

It is because too many children grew up without fathers to lead them show them life love them and guide them. Too many single mothers raising children and also the government taking away punishment from the parents. It is the same across any ethnic groups not just blacks. These are the big reasons why we have too many criminals. Train a child when he is small spank him you will not kill him...the Holy Bible tells us this. Police officers are so overwhelmed. I can not say or blame the police officers it is the fatherless child that grew up without direction and love.

I have respect for Jordan he could say anything but back in the early 2000's when asked about racial inequality he stated that for many years worked for a white coach played for a team owned by a white man in a professional sports league that was ran by white men. He said he felt like he was owned by white men white men who paid him millions of dollars and gave him the opportunity an opportunity that he couldn't of found on his own. He was speaking in front of a large audience of young African Americans. He knows that everyone deserves to be heard yet understands that there has to bee law and order.

I see blacks and whites getting along everyday where I am from I see blacks fighting whites whites fighting blacks blacks fighting blacks and whites fighting whites. It's going to happen but when the media focuses on it and blows it up on one side this is what you get. The only person we need to worry about being non racist is ourself. If each and every one of us could accomplish that one little feat we could fix this in less than 3 seconds. The media is the problem and the people who own them......

Mike all I can say is; some of these deaths could have been you are some of your family members. Yes it needs to stop. Young Black men and Women have to learn to value life more than money; especially when they did't earn it by the sweat of their brow. If they're not a movie star athlete singer etc; they have to get a job and earn their money and a retirement. Every Black Male can't be a Michael Jordan that generally comes once in a while. They need to learn to be themselves and not no one else.

No sure what this article is really about? Does anyone remember that it was two black men that killed Michael's father?

This complex problem needs a multi-tiered solution. We need community policing and retraining the police have been disconnected from the people. Criminals have to be called out and the media has to stop glorifying thugs. Remove aggressive officers and lastly give batons back to the police - they need a non deadly tool to keep criminals at bay and under control. That nightstick was the protection that a cop needed so they didn't need to pull their gun. Just a few ideas so don't trash them.
