Why do many foreigners who come to China think what they saw is so much different from what they heard at home?

All media are propaganda! When I firstcame to China in 2014, I had no idea what to expect because, frankly, I don’tpay attention to the media morons. They all have an agenda and I expect them tochoose and spin stories to suit their agenda. At least here in China they’reopen about it by stating clearly that the media exist to serve the CommunistParty of China. Anyway, I had no expectations when I came here. I’ve only livedin “small” cities (by Chinese standards, population around 5 million) here.Yet, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed living here. Public transportation even in thesesmall cities is as modern as anything I’ve experienced back home in the US.Roads, for the most part, are in much better condition than my home city ofBuffalo, NY.
I have yet to find much of the“Chinese food” you find in American Chinese restaurants in the West, but thefood here in China is even better, depending in one’s personal preferences.Train travel is amazingly inexpensive (even more so if you don’t take thehigh-speed trains). When locals ask me what I think of China, I tell them“there’s good and bad everywhere” and that’s true whether you’re in the“developed” Western countries, in China, or somewhere else. There are things aboutChina I will never get used to, like children using the sidewalk as a toilet;but with the right mindset, you learn to adapt and you learn to understand thatChina is not like back home and we should not expect it to be.

Most kids peeing on streets are withtheir grandparent, who are not as civilized as youngers. I personally accusethem every time if I saw them doing this, which is to do my part to tell themout of it. There are so many people like me in China doing this, I believe thiskind of bad behavior will disappear.

People who have never been to China –especially from the west – usually have a negative image about the country. That’s because there’s a lot of misperception about China. From its “ghostcities”, zombie companies, slowing economic growth and pollution problem –there’s a steady stream of negative news about the country – especially in thewest. And that often obscures the absolutely extraordinary things that going onin China. When you visit and take the time to understand what’s really going onin China, you find out that China is leading the world in many ways.
Here are just a few examples…
(1)China istaking the mantle of globalization.
As I first shared here, China isstaking its claim as the preeminent force driving globalisation through its OneBelt One Road (OBOR) initiative.China’s One Belt One Road is a large-scaledevelopment and infrastructure programme announced by China in late2013.Spanning the breadth of Asia into Europe, the OBOR initiative incorporatesaround 60 countries, which account for a third of global GDP and around 60percent of the global population. OBOR is a way that China can cement itsstrategic interests across a huge swathe of Africa, Central Asia and EasternEurope at the same time.
(2)China’smiddle class boom
But that’s not all… the country isalso experiencing a massive wealth explosion.
In 2000, just four percent of China’surban population was considered middle class. By 2022, over 550 million peoplewill be considered middle class in China. To put this in perspective, it’smiddle class will be 1.7 times the entire population of the U.S. And China’sgrowing middle class plans on spending more money – a lot more. Consumerspending is set to increase 55 percent between 2015 and 2020. This is the sametype of boom the U.S. experienced after World War II. So the country’s growthis just getting started.
(3)China’stechnology is better than you think
The country is becoming a leader inthe technology space.
Most of the world views China as anation of copycats and counterfeits. But China accounts for 20 percent of allglobal research & development spending. That’s just second behind the U.S.,with 26 percent.
In the field of artificialintelligence, China is also second – just behind the U.S. in terms of thenumber of companies in the space and the corresponding amount of financingreceived by those firms. And when it comes to simply brute computing power,China remains the world leader. Since mid-2013, China has held claim to theworld’s fastest supercomputer.
China’s fintech sector is leading the world
It’s also a leader in the fintechspace. Fintech is the use of technology to make financial services moreefficient.According to a recent joint report by professional services firmErnst & Young and Singaporean bank DBS, China has surged ahead of the likesof Silicon Valley and London to become the “undoubted centre of global fintechinnovation and adoption.” The country is now home to the world’s biggestfintech “unicorns,” which are start-up companies that are valued at over $1billion. Private equity firms and other fintech investors have never beenbusier with investing in China. In short, China is quickly overtakingthe U.S. and other developed countries in many areas. But you won’t hear thisstory in the mainstream media in the west. You also won’t hear about China beingthe place to be invested right now. If you’re interested in learning more aboutChina’s massive growth – and how early investors could make a fortune – clickhere.

Because if you’ve been to both the USand China, you’ll learn just how unfair China is portrayed in the west. Chinais a rival and a hassle, a big communist authoritarian, a country devoid ofhuman rights, a country that eat dogs, a country of no souls, a country withtons of KFCs…
Almost everything you hear on CNN, BBCand just about any other free press would tell you how terrible and awful Chinais as a country. Its people are uneducated, its buildings, infrastructures andGDPs fake, and nothing could ever come to your favor. Little by little, youstart to be more and more oblivious by just how biased it is, deliberatelyleaving out and twisting around all the positive things about China, itshospitality twisted to obedience (Chinese girls like it! Come to the land offree Asian girls, guys!), its culture turned to odd rituals (why do Chinesepeople drink herbal medicine? Aren’t they poisonous?), its non-cultures turnedto a casual thing (why do the Chinese eat dogs?) its government turned to akilling machine (1966! 1989!) …they don’t notice how China is a young countryand America made mistake at that age too, they don’t notice how China is acountry harboring 1.3 billion people and not so long ago lifted about 1 frompoverty, they don’t bother to tell you about the heinous crimes that thiscountry had been a victim of from 1840 to 1945, because, well, they might aswell be the perpetrator. They don’t notice what a long, exhausting journeyChina has endured, and they don’t notice that all the pain, all the sufferingcame with a bittersweet price.
Tillman Huett-Lassman once wrote aboutwhen he first informed his family that he’s coming to China, his family warnedhim to be careful. It is the same endeavor that the western press is trying toinform its people that China is not a free country. This has made the vastmajority of the western people not knowing the first thing about China. Theyassume what their press tell them is true and automatically identify all thatdon’t agree with them trolls. They go online and they see Dalai Lama beingpurged, they don’t try, not once, to seek the truth by doing research insteadof shouting out loud, along with their free press.

I think people hear the negatives muchmore than the positives. Are their negatives about the United States, of coursethere are, and many.Is it true you can’t drink the water in China, for the mostpart yes. Is it true that there is a lot of pollution, for the most part yes. And, there are many more negatives. However, the Chinese people are working onthem. Fewer people smoking, few people spitting (laws in big cities). As ayearly visitor to China I thoroughly enjoy the country. The country is rich init’s 4,000 year history. I find the people to be very accommodating or at thevery least treated as an equal. The more time you spend in China the negativesget smaller and the positives larger. Don’t knock it until you tried it. Likeanything, the more you learn about it the better. A history as long as China’sprovides a firm foundation for the country. You can feel that over there.

Interesting that most responses tothis question appear to be from Chinese, who readily accept the premise thattheir country is unfairly presented. As a Westerner who has studied and livedamong Chinese for many years, I can't agree - what I see in our media reflectsthe immensity, complexity, and mix of ancient and modern China pretty well. AndI have talked with friends and colleagues after their first trip to China whowere more impressed than surprised at what they saw. I’d guess that Westernersare more accustomed to seeing negative news than mainland Chinese, so we don’ttake it so seriously. On seeing negative stories abroad, anyone can complainthey don’t tell the whole story. Of course they don’t. But news is noteducation, it’s business.
Certainly Western news media coverearthquakes, typhoons, and other disasters - the old saying “if it bleeds, it leads”applies to China stories as well as Western ones. But even in these stories,China’s rapid and well organized emergency response stands out as a fundamentalchange from the neglect of provinces by old-time emperors. It’s a good thingthat now many more people are traveling between China and the West than 50years ago - we urgently need to improve our understanding of each other andfirst-hand experience is a much better approach than watching news.

To be fair, in the media (in mycountries of UK, Australia and New Zealand) China is NOT portrayed wrongly. Itis well known there just how advanced and modern is China. But perhaps in theUSA the media are, as the Donald says, full of “False News”! However, in thepast, China was indeed less modern and maybe even the way many people still believeit to be.The truth is that Asian countires are the new modern advanced placeson Earth.I live in Australia, New Zealand, Scotland and China - my wife of 6years is Chinese..
Before my first visit to China (about10 years ago) I expected the countryto be rather backward and maybe dirty. And,in fact, at that time, the city where I now spend a lot of time (and I am inFoshan, Guangdong as I write this) was not much better than I expected.Visibility was about a half kilometer. I remember a bridge near where I stayed(a Hotel in Foshan) - I could only ever see half way across it though it wasless than a km long. And on a trip to Beijing ( a few months before the OlympicGames) I witnessed air pollution all the way from Guangzhou to Beijing. Therewere lots of small scooters and small motorbikes, bicycles, tricycles all overthe place. not too many cars and horrendous driving. There were many small“shops” with open fronts and someone repairing washing machines, bicycles etc.
But I have been returning to Chinaevery year since. And every year I see improvements and advancement. Now, thereis no pollution and I can see for many many kms in clear air. The roads havealmost no motorcycles at all (and I haven’t seen a scooter since I arrived aweek ago). The cars are nearly all quality cars and fairly new, and the roadsare now quite busy. The driving standard has still a way to go - but is amillion times better than it was. The shops, the malls etc are better than anyI know in UK, NZ or Australia. I dont know all of USA - been mainly to theWestern states, and been in all of those in or to West of Rockies - thestandard of shops, malls, buildings, homes, railways and pretty much everywhereyou look, is vastly superior in China. Do the people of USA realise just howbackward their nation is compared to modern China??
I have now travelled in completesilence, smoothly at 325 km/hr on one of the high speed trains. I have witnessedhow well dressed, modern and polite the people there are. How clean are thestreets. How safe from crime I feel (what a difference from USA!!) I recentlyspoke to an old friend to say that I was off to China again. And made somecomments about how great the place now is and so modern. She looked a littlequizzed and said she imagined China was big polluted cities linked with fieldsof poor peasants working in the paddy fields. I had to laugh!! But really, itis sad!

After US, I came to my home countryand told my ex-boss that I got a job in China, in Shanghai. Her response waswhat will you do there??? Ants crawl on the walls, dirty and so on… I eventhought like that. But that's what our western media (propaganda) is doing. Ifyou rely on Hollywood you will believe that USA won in Vietnam because ofRambo, life is wonderful, everyone has unrealistic beauty standard, money growon the trees and so on. If you see Latin soap shows you would believe that lifein Mexico and other S. American countries is beyond wonderful. Plus you mighthave some rich parent that you don't know off till you are grown up to run thebusiness.
Haha. The thing is that China doesn't advertiseher potential and the western media has the chance to provide and imagine ofChina according to the needs of their bosses. If you see the news, the onlynews shown from China are that of earthquake deaths, poverty, ghost cities, people eating dogs or bugs and miners dying in poor conditions. And thiscreates an image that here is so bad. And than BAM!!! You came to China, trainstravel with the speed of 300 km/h, cars not older then 5 years, highways, industry etc… you can do your research. Enjoy China!!!
