I woke up at 3am to secure a spot to get this shot from the top of 相公mountain, Guilin, China.

I remember seeing classic drawings of these as a kid. I just thought they were very stylished drawings of mountains. I was blown away when I realized that they actually look like that.

There are many more places that would take the breath out of you in China. Guilin is probably one of the hottest spots for scenes like this

Yes! I think china gets a lot of publicity for all kinds of things, all for good reason, but not much for just how stunning some of it is. It's a huge country with such beauty.

Kind of reminds me of the mountains in the intro to dragon ball

Are there loads of other people taking pictures that you had to 'secure a spot' early? Or did you just mean you needed to be there early to get the sunrise?

Yep. For the majority of my trip at Guilin, I had to race against other photographers for photography spots. Sometimes people even yell at each other for a spot. Being young and fit gives you the most advantage here coz the elderly cannot sprint all the way up the mountain.

Cool shot and all, but sounds crowded, would take the fun out of hobbyist photography for me.
Any shots of the crowd and the spot?

here you go!
This is just the top level. There are several levels on this mountain

Sometimes crowds lead to your most creative moments, though. My friend and I laughed while trying to shoot Poulnabrone passage tomb in Ireland. A bus full of Japanese tourists pulled up about 10 minutes after we got there. They surrounded the place. We looked over at another tourist, German I think, and he said, "my friends are going to look at my photos and think i went to Japan." You shoot different angles or details until the crowd clears out. You spend more time at the site waiting for the right shot. Your whole trip is slower and more purposeful. You have more time to contemplate the entire setting and landscape.

You are an optimistic person who makes the best of your situations. Excellent way to live life, good job :)

I'm really just more of a pragmatist. If there's nothing I can do to change the situation, I don't waste my time and energy freaking out about it. If I spent money to go somewhere I'm not going to let other people ruin it for me. I'll enjoy it the way it is.
I couldn't believe how many people were on the Great Wall when I went. I was disappointed that I wouldn't get a great shot of it empty. But I looked around and was thrilled that everyone (except our group) seemed to be Asian. Many times you travel half way round the world and end up at tourist locations with people from your own country. At least I was surrounded by native people in the most foreign tourist location I've ever been to.
Same thing happened when we traveled down the Li River. Our day was set, we couldn't change it if we had bad weather. And it rained that day. Well, the locals turned out in droves. They think going down the Li River in the rain is a treat, like it's romantic to them. I didn't get the kind of shots I really wanted but the locals were so happy that I didn't mind. I still got to see if with my eyes.

Why not just get up at 2am? Hour head start.

The gate opens at 4am. We que up at the gate and race towards the peak. That's why we have to wake up at 3. 2am if you want breakfast.

I sailed down the river that runs through this part of Guilin -maybe the yellow river if I remember correctly- when I studied abroad in China! I swear pictures still don't do it justice. Felt like I was in Avatar. Most beautiful place I've ever seen in my life. Will never forgot what I saw there.
