Can Japan still defeat China now like they did in WW2?

Japan didn’t defeat China though, China still fought on no matter how outgunned and outclassed they were. China tied down over 1 million Japanese troops in WW2 and inflicted over 500k casualties on them, those 500k soldiers could’ve been used invading the rest of Asia instead. The US should be thankful that the Chinese were willing to do so much to help the war effort.

Attacking China was a stupid idea.

Japan could’ve been allied with China instead.

Unlikely to happen since China back then was a friend of the US who had placed embargoes on Japan.

China had tacitly supported Japan during the Russo-Japanese war because China had viewed Japan as a Asian bulwark against Western Imperialism only to have the Japanese backstab them and invade China.

The Americans weren't a party to the opium wars except trying to stop the Europeans from dividing the China.
But of course between the space of 1905 and 1939, much had changed within the Japanese political landscape.

And the only reason the US embargoed Japan was because it attacked China.

Japan was definitely far to eager in their conquests. They might have been extremely powerful at that time, but they lacked vital resources, They would have been better off continueing trying to conquer other territories until they had more resources and manpower.
Unfortunately in their eagerness they first attacked China whose population dwarfed theirs…and then they decided to move the USA from merely placing sanctions to declaring a full scale war on them… I really question what the hell their leadership was thinking.

It's kind of yhe USSR of the Pacific theatre. Japan thought it could deliver a knock-out blow, but instead it got tied up in a war of attrition

The Japanese vowed to conquer China within 3 months, but 8 years later they surrendered to the allies.

Consider the mentality of the Japs towards the end of WW2. They conveyed their ‘terms of surrender to the Allies (through the Russians) where they want to retain Manchuria and Taiwan after their surrender. They were on the verge of total defeat (,actually their fate was decided when Truman decided on the use of the atom bombs) and yet they seem delusional on the realities of war, that as a nation on the brink of total collapse she still wants to set terms. She has forgotten that she was the country responsible for starting the killings murders and hardships , they feel no remorse or shame for the pain they have caused especially to China. One can conclude by saying they still harbour the ambition to expand their empire and spread thrir influence with American’s help and China has to be wary of her.

50 years between the first Sino-Japanese naval war and the end of WWII, the Imperial Jap military force was almost invincible. They forced the Qing government to sign the Treaty of Shimonoseki, beat the Russians at the Russo-Japanese war, won the WWI as an ally, invasion of Manchuria, 2nd Sino-Japanese war, invasion of South East Asia. They had nurtured a few generations of arrogant Japanese people who treated fellow Asians as animals. For Japan to finally face the music and surrender to the WWII allies was unthinkable in that era. That's probably why the right wing Japanese still honor the war criminals and deny war atrocities; killing of animals is not atrocity.

Well they didn't in WW2. China absorbed by far the largest part of the IJA in WW2. It suffered hugely but was never beaten. It didn't have much by way of modern weaponry but kept up resistance that for sure made life a lot less difficult for the US in the Pacific and the British Alliance in Burma.
It's a vastly under estimated war in the West. China thoroughly deserved its place as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council. As did Britain, US and USSR. Canada in Europe Theatre or India in the Far East probably put the next biggest contributions to the Allies success.
