Everything metallic -- including a door knob -- has vanished from a remote Japanese island where a group of North Korean fisherman landed briefly to take refuge, a local resident said Tuesday.

"Everything has gone. Everything. Including door hinges and a door knob, everything made of metal has gone," said Shusaku Yoshida, the 67-year-old caretaker of a shelter facility for local fishermen.

Some of the North Korean fishermen have admitted to "taking out" some things from the small island, according to Jiji press.

Japanese authorities are continuing to question nine of the 10 North Koreans first spotted last week aboard a tiny wooden boat struggling in bad weather off the northern island of Hokkaido.

The other was reportedly sent to hospital on Monday with a stomach ache.

The fishermen -- who identified themselves as North Korean -- briefly landed on an uninhabited island to take refuge.

But soon after the group left, officials noticed items from buildings on the island had vanished.

The caretaker said the shelter's lock had been broken and gave a long list of items missing from inside the lodge.

"Two TV sets, three fridges, a washing machine, an oven/microwave, two stereo sets, a DVD/CD player, an electric saw, a stove (heater), coal, a motorbike and a generator," he told private broadcaster Fuji TV.

"I was so surprised, I had to sit down," he said.

A coastguard official told AFP on Monday that the list of items that had disappeared included some of the solar panels at the lighthouse on the island, an anime poster and blankets.

More than 60 boats from North Korea have already been discovered this year in Japanese waters, according to the coastguard.

Experts say some North Korean fishermen are travelling far out to sea in order to satisfy government mandates for bigger catches.

But their old and poorly equipped vessels are prone to mechanical and other problems, including running out of fuel, and there are few ways for them to call for rescue.

That's why the missiles keep falling into the ocean , that's as far as a washing machine motor will take it.

Need to tell Keg belly to stop spending so much on beer and rockets and buy some good fishing boats.

Sent to the hospital with a"stomach ache." Worms on the move, more likely.

I'm sure many of them have never seen a tv or washing machine/dryer, etc. Look at their boats...not even a short wave marine radio to call for help...made of wood and rope...wonder how many ghost boats have sunk or still floating around the pacific ocean...

A government that spending money on weapons instead of their citizen's well-being will not last for long.

You might want to look at our Federal budget. Robbing the poor to pay for more military. A Republican Senator has stated that SS, Medicare, etc. are next on the chopping block.

Probably a small fortune for a fisherman from North Korea.

It would appear that the easiest way to achieve victory over North Korea is with the strategic application of cheeseburgers.

Same thing happens here in the states like parking your car in certain neighborhoods like Chicago.

Poverty breeds crime.

Matthew11 hours ago
@BILLK, That actually an inaccurate statement, It's wealth disparity that breeds crime..... and there is a difference. Most of the "poor" in America are in fact quite rich relative to the rest of the world, it's just that in areas of high wealth disparity.... rich people and rich facilities live/are next to poor people who then try to get what they do not have. In areas where there is extreme poverty, but the wealth disparity isn't very high there is less crime.

Wally11 hours ago
@matthew : Matthew is right. All Poor, no steal. All Rich, no steal. All middle class, no steal. AND he is VERY correct about our "poor" - we were in Uganda. MOST families get meat (chicken) twice a year - Christmas and Easter. PERIOD. They still cook over charcoal open fires. SOME Villages have electricity. Many do not. NO ONE has indoor plumbing. "Poor" is relative.
