In a cramped and dark venue in a sleazy Tokyo district, dozens of middle-aged men cheer at a performer on stage: The object of their adoration is a six-year-old girl.

Decked out in make-up with ribbons in her hair, Ai is dressed like an adult, but still looks very much a child.

She is a so-called "idol" singer -- common in Japan, where rights groups have complained that society's sometimes permissive view of the sexualisation of young girls puts minors at risk.

In the crowd at an idols show, Soichiro Seki, 40, says he watches young girls on stage twice a week. He insists he goes just to encourage the performers and feels no shame.

Idol Tama Himeno, who has performed on stage since the age of 16, says the men attending her shows worship the performers and crave communication with young girls that they cannot get elsewhere.

Most fans are "pure," insists Himeno, now 24, although she admits she was once offered 30,000 yen ($260) for her used pantyhose.

Ai's mother, Mami Yamazaki, says her daughter has wanted to be an"idol" singer since she watched an anime cartoon about young girls striving for stardom.

The idol industry in Japan is no different from how child actors are in other countries including the US. They all start as children with dreams of stardom, don whatever costume the management decides will be good for the viewers, and perform on stage regardless of whether it's a street performance or a local stage.
This article is highly biased in that it singles out that percentage of eccentric fans just to make the story sound dramatic. In truth, any idol/actress/actor will encounter these kinds of eccentric/weird/perverted fans as they go up in stardom but that doesn't mean all fans are like that. Many if not majority of fans can still be just the average normal person who just like good music or watching an artist perform.
That kind of behavior (like the buying used panties) is majorly frowned upon by the public in Japan and they are what the people call "hentai/perverts". Try asking for used panties in public in Japan, I'm 100% sure you'll get arrested by the friendly neighborhood police officer soon. This article is really biased and serves to create prejudice to a nation and its people without clearly identifying all sides of the topic. It's choosing only the details that will make you go"Ugh!
