A lead engineer of China’s J-20 super maneuverable stealth fighter – hailed as the new bulwark against the US grabbing air superiority in the South China Sea – has told The People’s Daily his team will make further modifications to the plane’s engine, coating and weapon bay.
The J-20 entered into service in 2017 as China’s “4.5th generation” indigenous fighter.

Hey J-20! Yeah the F-35 was a disappointment in my eyes as well. There are just too many compromises built into one airframe to try to make it a jack of all trades. When you do that it becomes mediocre at performing ALL jobs instead of being very good at any one job.
Any confirmation yet on what the J-20s intended role is yet? Is it a strike fighter or is it, as some speculated, an aircraft designed to take out tankers, early warning aircraft and other assets to extend US war capabilities to long ranges?
Someone shared a satellite photo in a group I used to be in a while back and while there were recognizable Chinese warplanes on the tarmac in this satellite image there was one that was remarkably out of place; It looked like a pristine condition F-117?! Have you heard/read/seen anything about this? I know your' peeps got a hold of samples of our radar absorbent material (RAM) and composite construction materials from the one shot down over Serbia but a whole aircraft? I can only imagine one of our state departments handed one over to China at some point.

As for why China would bother with that tech, I haven't the foggiest idea, just as I have no idea why or how such an aircraft would be IN China at all. There has been a long standing "mystery" surrounding why one of our F-117s which people have started calling the "Gray Dragon," as it used a different RAM (metamaterial) coating that is gray rather than the black type used on the other F-117s. Looking at the image I provided it sure looks like the Gray Dragon doesn't it?
Although the J-20 is revolutionary and new I still think that the Shenyang J-31 Gyrfalcon is a more attractive aircraft!
Any way that I look at it, a China with equipment of equal or greater military capabilities to their American counterparts is a good thing for the world as it is more likely to keep American Imperialism in check and keep the US from resorting to using their military to solve political issues.
I am a model builder and i am looking forward to building Trumpeter's models of both the J-20 and J-31. (If you didn't already know, Trumpeter is one of the BEST model kit makers on the market and is also from China!)

I wouldn't be too sure about calling the J-20 a joke. It has the same super-cruise ability as our F-22, a larger weapon's payload, they have developed hypersonic missile tech, which the US hasn't, they have the same optics suites that allows them to target aircraft without the use of Radar as our new birds do and finally if it DID get down to a knife fight, it's a canard wing fighter aircraft. In the joint Red Flag Training ops the Eurofighter Typhoon ate the F-22s alive in close range ACM simulations. Granted the Eurofighter Typhoon is a much lighter aircraft than the F-22 - but the J-20 is in the same approximate weight range and has a superior thrust/weight ratio.

They also still have to train their pilots, maintain their aircraft and pay for fuel and weapons. The estimated cost of a J-20 so far is $110 million each, about the same cost as a F-35. China plans to have 33 of these aircraft so far when there are already over 200 F-35s.

I see the new modification that they did on the canards. It's now slightly tilted upwards instead of being parallel to the main wing as originally made. So now it can provide more lift on the upper surface of the main wing like the Eurofighter/Rafale/Gripen instead of just being cosmetic.

The J-20 is a draggy dog. The canards are on the same plane as the wing and thus interfere with the airflow over them. Like another draggy dog, the J-20 needs to use afterburner to go supersonic so fuel consumption will triple.
