Summer has finally hit and whilst the weather has been nice recently I know by the end of the month I'll be trying to claw off my skin thanks to the humidity and 35℃+.

At work I am in a constant battle with my coworkers regarding the the AC remote because none of them seem to be dying as much as I am. My boyfriend (who is Chinese) is constantly turning off the AC when I'm asleep and insists it's just too cold as opposed to the standard thing of thinking AC is unhealthy.

I'm British/Dutch which might play a part in it because the weather isn't great in both of those countries- Yet here people are layered up beyond recognition come winter time whilst I'm happy with a scarf and a jacket.

I've had many discussions with Chinese friends about this and they are sure that Western bodies are different. Is there any scientific evidence behind Asians being more sensitive to the cold or should I get my thyroids checked out?

My guess is that you're in the mid-to-southern part of China (Shanghai is basically sub-tropical). Talk to Chinese from the north and they'll bitch about this stuff too.
I've a few friends from Harbin (I'm from Wisconsin) and we feel the same way about southerners and the weather.

Ehhh my mil is native dongbei and she keeps the indoor temperature at 26 C while wearing her woolen pants and heavy sweater. When she visits us obviously we don't put the heat at 26 C but she cannot even sleep at 22 C so we had to get her an electric heated blanket to keep her warm enough to sleep in bed at 22 C.

I concur. I think it has to do with upbringing. I mostly just wear a short sleeve shirt during winter when I was a kid. Winter is not too cold in where I grew up. About 5-15°C and drops to 0 maybe for a day or two in the morning.

BUT WHY???
(No why)

tnp636 11 points·9 hours ago
I've been here a LONG time and I have a theory about most of this stuff.

In the case of keeping windows open in the winter; carbon-monoxide poisoning. They used to burn coal wood whatever they could get their hands on to stay warm in the winter. I'm sure millions of people have died of carbon-monoxide poisoning because of this. So over time windows closed (duh it's freaking cold outside) which means no air flow leads to carbon monoxide poisoning which equals death which means unhealthy.

Same reason most Chinese don't like uncooked vegetables. Or non-warm water. Traditionally these were not properly cleaned or filtered so people get sick from it. Consequently it's considered "unhealthy".

Don't take a baby out for the first 100 days: Having experienced the open sewage alongside the roads that used to pass for "waste management" this is also makes sense. Newborn babies go outside get covered in shit (literally) get sick and die. Therefore babies outside too early = death.

Chinese may not be generally religious but their superstitions substitute and generally carry the weight of what we would consider religion. So when you want to argue about science with them regarding most of the nonsense remember that it's like arguing about god. You're probably not going to get far.

My Experience is that AC is no problem to run it on high duty the colder the better... rather bring a thin windbreaker than turning up the temperature. But if the temperature outside drops below 20o it is time to take out the down jacket which i would usually wear in an north european winter and then still feel to hot most of times.

Northeast:
In office in the summer everyone wears shorts/t-shirts (male) or hotpants/vests (female) or some combination of this.
In winter no coats at desks are allowed but everyone is wearing thermals anyway so the heating's not super high (-20 outside about +20 inside which with or without thermals is pretty OK(.

I run hot. my girl runs hot but she complains when the fan is on her. as if she's been brainwashed it will make her sick. the kids also complain it's hot if there's no air con. so it's probably some silly superstition. and females should feel cooler due to a higher internal body temperature and cooler limbs.

However I think I may have found one if the rare few who despises hot water. Anytime we get served hot water in a restaurant he'll return it and ask for cold with ice. Three times after this happened we had serving staff asking him why his Chinese is so good because they assumed he was Korean or Japanese

Bodyfat is a great insulator so if we are talking in generalizations yes Chinese are more susceptible to cold than westerners.

Farhandlir 2 points·7 hours ago
Chinese are skinny fat Asians in general they have a less dense bone structure than Caucasians and Africans so a Chinese who looks "a little fat" may actually have a much higher BMI than a Westerner who also looks "a little fat".

Take two people the same height and the same weight one is Asian the other Caucasian bones will account for 10%* of the body mass of the Asian person but 20%* of the body mass of the Caucasian person therefore at same height and weight the Asian has more body fat than the Caucasian even at slightly lower weights.

*差不多 numbers I have no idea how much bones weigh in real life but you get the idea.
But yeah China doesn't have the same obesity epidemic as Anglo countries although it is rapidly catching up if you look at children these days.

Can somewhat confirm I'm ethnic Chinese when I was overweight at 82kg I wear just a business shirt in the winter (around 7-13 degrees Celsius here in Auckland) and I was ok. and in the office I would need a fan to keep myself cool.

Now after I lost 20kg or so of fat... my hands are constantly cold and I wear 2-3 layers in the office almost all the time..
I know that I might not have as much subcutaneous fat proportionally as Europeans but being fat really helps to keep the body temperature up.

Honestly while I usually hate when people make overarching claims on race based on genetics... I do personally believe that Caucasians - especially north Europe - are more sensitive to hot temperatures.
As you go away from the equator people (1) get hairier (2) get fatter (3) get larger. Hair and fat obviously help insulate in cold weather and larger vertebrates do better in the cold due to a smaller surface-area-to-volume-ratio (I.e. Bergman's rule).
(I'm fully aware that this all might be pseudoscience so anyone's free to correct me if I'm wrong.)

Personally I think it's more to do with population density. The more people you have crammed together the easier it is for an infection to spread. In comparison the West is virtually empty of people.
