I shouldn’t be surprised that Derbyshire would quote Midler considering his own paucity of knowledge that primarily stems from marrying a race traitor.
Midler is the Malcom Gladwell of China hands, writing pithy “just-so” anecdotes that sound plausible to the ignorant but collapse once his theories are subject to the rigorous scrutiny. His tea example being one of them, flat our wrong, but plausible sounding if you are relying on faulty heuristics.
The reason that China drives some white expats nutty as it were has a deeper psychological reason. The same type of oriental fatigue exists all throughout the far east but it primarily stems from resentment engendered by two factors. Reality not matching up with wishful expectations and the contempt engendered by unwarranted generosity. The Chinese are not isolationist enough and far too charitable with the Westerners among them, giving them too much for so little. Like the spoiling of a child, this creates a sense of entitlement among certain caliber of expats that manifests as seething resentment towards their benefactors. No doubt some whites will take umbrage at this observation but consider if you will the simmering hostility and contempt with which Muslim immigrants in Europe regard the natives, natives whose tax dollars pay for their welfare benefits. It’s a very human failing that stems from a character flaw.

Look at those countries like NK, Cuba.. yes they probably enjoy what you wish, a central planning economy where everyone live simple, peaceful, few crimes, morally upright, with social security like free schooling & medical.
But will the West empires vultures permit them to live in peace? Without China protection, NK will be in sanction hardship or get invaded. Cuba, Venezuela, Iran are still under constant threats & subversion. Many countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, Sukarno’s Indonesia, Libya, Syria, ..are examples.
So to have real communism benefits, China needs to be powerful enough to resist foreign aggression while able to protect its borders like SCS & against FukusIndia invasion. Without strong economy as backbone, what’s there for modernizing military?
Deng had good foresight to make China strong & prosperous through socialism-capitalism first. Only when reaches a threshold, and the world has rid off US evil empire, then China can start to roll out its own version of Socialism-Confucianism-Buddhism for a truly peaceful, prosperous, self sufficient, strong country with high morality people. Pres Xi has already working on that, a China dream with a common prosperous destiny for mankind.
In reality, communism is destined for failure not bcos its not perfect, but a perfect idealism required perfect holy people to run it. Yet we know rare is Buddhist Ariyan or Confucianism saint, plentiful are greedy imperfect crooks that will lead the communism, that’s a great disaster awaiting for mankind that history has proven.

I wonder if so many different ideas need to be and remain connected as you say. Even if China (most likely) finds a superior model of governance for late 21st century people it will undoubtedly be one, with no little thanks to Marx in China’s case, which gives far more freedom to the masses and scope for expressing opinions and preferences that one won’t regret expressing than any pre Enlightenment form other than maybe a few irrelevant special cases like Athens for citizens. So, consider…. the specific error of most post Enlightenment thinkers was to carry over the “equality in God’s eyes” notion into unscientific sentimental rubbish. But why, since the lower orders were not actually respected even as bourgeois talent was necessarily being rewarded? Maybe in the UK it was the experience of the upper/ruling classes still being able to lead (and the Empire had plenty to offer all Brits) and sheer political opportunism leading to the excessive extension of the franchise. So, perhaps I should look forward to China showing how to modify democracy

If the Jap is not an unrepentant war criminal and cognative liar, why have they been lying, denying, glossing over their war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes agaisnt peace for the last 75 years? Why can’t they sincerely show remorse about the war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes against peace committed by their barbaric forebears like the Germans?
I also know decent Americans too, but those decent Americans do not make American bombing, killing and waterboard on the fabricated phantom WMD allegation as humanitarian intervention, desipte there are some decent Americans, but the crimes committed by the American government in their name, willingly or unwillingly, the American as a whole is still a war criminal, war monger and criminal against peace and humanity.
There are many video clips on the Youtube showing the Jap has not changed much from their barbaric forebears.
The Japanese are different, they continuously deny about their inhuman atrocities, wrongful acts and invasion during the world wars. The Japanese PM Abe and many political figures there publicly regularly deny what the country had done in WWII. More importantly, his cabinet received overwhelming support from Japanese. This nation and many of its people were not only evil but has lost their conscience to enable them to be a normal person. Such nation and people are a real danger to other countries.

UIf Athens is India, Sparta is China. India is diverse, argumentative full of ideas and discussion. China is disciplined is organised militaristic always ready to obey the next order. Whilst India is always ready to rebel and and argue the pros and cons of all equations in an alliances.
China is acting according to its culture and interest base and one understand same situation draws a softer response India and China is always ready to act.
Thus is nothing wrong to the way that China acts. In This I include in all its interaction all human-emotions in its international relations. We must remember that three important characteristics from the ancient times. China defines itself as Middle Kingdom and its emperor as a divine representative.
The Character is defined as a country that has no strong God centricity. God does not play a major role. Confucian ideology, even Buddhism, and present day communism is atheistic has no Mythoiogy or moralistic and every thing is pragmatic and practical. They do have a concept of superiority of the Chinese civilisation. So it I similar to western Copt of chosen people amongst whom the redeemer and messiah will be born. Being agnostic people they have converted it into a civilisational superiority.
As Confucian society the believe in Authority, order, organisation, discipline, unity and leadership and respect to its elders and ancestors.
They are feeling highly humiliated that went under the hegemony of western and Japanese powers and particularly they are deeply wounded by the subjugation by Japanese whose culture is different.
Now let us come to India and China. This is where the confusion reigns in Chinese mind. They know India was a great Civilisational power with its strong ideological superiority but still would like to interpret the Indian apparent anarchy as weakness but it is never sure and it knows India's non alignment, apparent friendliness to all, playing all camps of power simultaneously is enigma to all linear thinking nations. Our abilities to be frenemies almost all in the world.
Chinese want to reach a pre eminent position in Asia not by violence but more by bribing and pressure and by an overwhelming presence in Asia economically and militarily in the Indo Pacific and they are inexorably moving all pawns in that direction and be in a position to challenge USA. They would like to have a say in any coalition of USA-Japan or any possible nexus that it may devlop with India by any one or more nations like USA , Japan, Russia.
On the whole they are moving strongly in this direction but cautiously. They will reach it.
The only question is whether there will be any parallel power combination in Asia and what adjustment they have to make between theslves wheter they wi be Antogonistic or cooperative.
India too has to learn to play this game if it want to remain a major power of the world instead of being confined to and in South Asia.

Well to Hong Kong, China is growing at a rate a bit too fast, just slow down a lil more so Hong Kong can remain relevant a bit longer.
To America and Japan and Europe and blah blah blah developed, China just exist.
To Vietnam and Cambodia and India and lesser developed country, China just look too nice for a country that was dirt poor back in the 90s.
To China itself, I think Chinese people think the direction it is heading is not bad, just need to make more progress.

The “self-destruction” of Europe as you mentioned is integral part of European history, just like An Lushan Rebellion, Taiping Rebellion and the Cultural Revolution are integral parts of Chinese history.
You cannot take the dark parts of European history (such as the self-destruction, dark ages and religious wars) out and say that’s not European history, only the shiny parts are European history, just like you cannot take the dark parts of Chinese history out and say that’s not Chinese history, only the shiny parts are Chinese history.
Furthermore, there is plenty of “self-destruction” in Chinese history too. The most recent one arguably is the Cultural Revolution and Maoist policies in general. I could follow your logic and exclude these Chinese self-destructions and say Europe and America could never have dominated the world unless China self-destructs. But I wouldn’t say that, because like I said “self-destructions” are integral parts of history and cannot be isolated or excluded.

In an authoritarian state, the government can move right on economic issues while staying conservative on social issues like immigration. You can’t seem to do this in a western democracy. If you shift right on economic issues you end up having to shift left on a range of social issues. Conversely, if you want to push some conservative social policies you need to push left on the economic front to attract the working and lower-middle class.
Since the economic shift to the right in the late 1970s, there has been a decreasing amount of political space to push right-wing social policies and views. Trump has move the Overton window a little to the right, but if his rhetoric about helping the white working class rings hollow, then the window will shift left again.
