I keep seeing foreigners (me included) in MacDonalds Starbucks so much I'm thinking : which stereotype Chinese people in tier 1 have on foreigners living around them? (especially the majority who don't have foreign friends). For sure many think we mostly eat hamburgers and drink coffee drinking beer and riding on cheap ebikes

I'm a pretty tall beefy guy the kind you don't want to mess with but I'm actually very nice. So I've had people getting absolutely terrified when they realize that I speak the language after saying really rude things about me particularly when riding an elevator because they can't get away. They probably thought I'm going punch them or something (foreigners are so violent after all) but I just give them a smile while thinking what a bunch of stupid peasants and move on. Such people aren't worth wasting your time with.

I used to get that but I've been here for 10 years now and the "handsum" comments are getting rarer. I guess it also has something to do with this beard I'm sporting now. Not that I was doing anything about it but it was a lot more fun when hot mums came to talk with me or were outright flirting. "Say hello to Yeye." doesn't quite make it. Come to think of it I should probably hit the gym and fish out my razor.

I had a funny incident once while in line ordering at KFC in the far suburbs of Guangzhou. I ordered in Mandarin and these two 城市卫生 ladies were standing beside me waiting to cut the line after me. One of them says to the other (in Cantonese) “wa look at this handsome gweilo. He can speak Mandarin and read zhongwen.” I catch the eye of the lady who wasn’t speaking and she says “Maybe he knows Cantonese too”. The first lady says “impossible gweilos cant understand Cantonese.” To which I replied in Cantonese that “Actually I do understand Cantonese.” They were so shocked I thought one was going to fall on the floor. Then the one who was calling me gweilo asked me to add her on Wechat.

我在广州远郊一肯德基排队点餐时曾碰到过一件趣事。我当时是用普通话点餐，然后有两个“城市卫生”的女士站在我旁边等着插在我之后点餐。其中一个对另一个说（用粤语），“哇，这帅鬼佬会说普通话还看得懂中文欸。”刚没说话的另一个女士让我印象深刻，她说，“也许他也懂粤语。”第一个说话的女士说，“不可能，鬼佬哪里会懂粤语。”而这时我用粤语回答，“我确实懂粤语。”她们太过震惊以至于我都觉得有个人被惊到要倒在地上了。然后那个叫我鬼佬的女士让我加她微信。

True but it is less and less a stereotype now. More people in big cities assume now that foreigners speak Mandarin.

I'm currently working in Suzhou SIP where people are supposed to be on average educated not migrant workers. It happens a few time in a week.

Yesterday I was walking back home from work and lots of people were doing the same. I go past a group of guys who upon seeing me change their conversation from office gossip to jeez there are so many foreigners here really too many of them nowadays. I was 2 meters away from them with my headphones on. You can count on one hand the foreign engineers working around here for the thousands of engineers and technicians commuting everyday here.

Bit different but kinda the same. Beijing University dinner with some of the more educated people in China at least by the book.
Round table dinner the guy who knows I've been in China for 6 years asks the waitress to bring fork because I can't use chopsticks. He then was surprised I could use chopsticks.

I think it used to be definitely Chinese or Japanese with a hefty does of "they're all the same to me." Now you can include Korean in that mix.

I've been told a few times that all foreigners constantly drink coffee throughout the day and can't function without it.

好几次我听到有人说，外国人他们一整天都一直不停地喝咖啡，如果不喝咖啡他们就什么也做不了。

Once I was at a conference and a colleague offered to buy me Starbucks coffee. I refused and she was stunned. She offered at least 4 or 5 more times over the next 20 minutes and I refused every time. I then went to the bathroom and when I came back there was a large Starbucks coffee at my seat. She explained that she was sure I needed it. I refused to drink it.

有一次，我去参加一个会议，一个同事提出说要给我买星巴克的咖啡。我拒绝了，她感到很惊讶。在接下来的20分钟内，她又提了至少4、5次要给我买咖啡，每一次我都拒绝了。然后我就去了卫生间，回来的时候，就有一大杯星巴克咖啡放在了我的座位上。她解释说，她确定我需要它。我拒绝喝这杯咖啡。

True but more seriously I find what she did to be extremely rude and disrespectful.
I generally expect people to take me at my word. Fine there are times where people play a little dance and refuse to say they want something they want but my level of refusal went far past that point. Her buying me the coffee felt like the equivalent of saying "I respect you so little that I think you're lying about your own preferences so I'm going to override your judgement and do what's best for you." Yes I know that wasn't her intent but it genuinely bothered me.

没错，但更严重的是，我觉得她的行为极其得粗鲁和没礼貌。我通常都期待他人把我说的话当回事。好吧，有的场合比如人们并不会跳舞但是别人邀请时也不会把心里的想法直接说出来，但是我一般都不会那么委婉。 她替我买了咖啡，潜在的意思好像是在说“我不怎么尊重你，我觉得你没有说出你的真实喜好，所以我就忽略了你的意见，直接替你定了最适合你的”。是的，我知道那不是她的本意，但是这通常会让我不爽。
