Two years ago, an18-year-old was allegedly gang-raped at the Running of the Bulls festival inSpain.

One night, thewoman told police, five men in their mid-20s offered to walk her to her car.But instead of accompanying her to the vehicle, they pinned her against a wall, told her to “shut up,” then took turns sexually assaulting her. One man evenstole her phone before they left, she alleged.

The woman was laterfound curled in a fetal position, crying in “a distraught state.” She went tothe police, who made arrests the next day.

The subsequenttrial in what has been called the “Wolf Pack” case, named for a WhatsApp groupof which the defendants were members, consumed Spain's attention for nearly twoyears.

Much of the trial revolved around short videosthe defendants took of the woman during the attack. In the clips, the woman isseen in a “passive, submissive stance,” with her eyes closed. The men'sattorneys said this was evidence that she'd consented. They also pointed to areport compiled by a private investigator who secretly followed the victim inthe days after the incident. He took pictures of her smiling and laughing withfriends — evidence, the defense team said, that the woman had not beentraumatized.

The woman's attorneys pushed back against theidea that she had offered her “consent.”

“The defendants want us to believe that on thatnight they met an 18-year-old girl, living a normal life, who, after 20 minutesof conversation with people she didn’t know, agreed to group sex involvingevery type of penetration, sometimes simultaneously, without using a condom,”prosecutor Elena Sarasate said, according to the Guardian.

The judge did not allow the jury to consider theWhatsApp chats among the men, who texted “us five are f---ing one girl” and“there is video” shortly after the attack. In other chats, the men joked aboutdrugging women, then raping them. One even shared video of one of the menassaulting another woman, who appeared unconscious.

On Thursday, the men were acquitted of sexualassault, a charge that includes rape. They were found guilty, instead, of thelesser charge of “sexual abuse” and sentenced to nine years in prison. (Thewoman's attorneys had sought 22 years.) Each man must also pay the woman about$12,000.

That is not nearly enough for many in Spain. Inthe wake of the verdict, tens of thousands of people have taken to the streetsin protest. Holding signs declaring, “It's not sexual abuse, it's rape,”activists rallied in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia Pamplona and Alicante. Anonline petition calling for the disqualification of the trial's judges hasgathered more than 1.2 million signatures.

State prosecutorssay that they will appeal the ruling.

Even Spain's national police force came outstrongly for the woman, tweeting “No is no” a dozen times shortly after theverdict.

Meanwhile, politicians have promised to rethinkSpain's laws on sexual violence. Right now, a victim must prove that aperpetrator was violent or intimidating to gain a rape conviction. Many women'srights activists say that sets the bar too high.

An editorial in the newspaper El Paisnoted that violence or intimidation can be hard for survivors to prove. It“leads to the painful question of just how much a person needs to fight toavoid being raped without risking getting killed, and still get recognized as avictim of a serious attack against sexual freedom while ensuring that theperpetrators do not enjoy impunity,” the newspaper said, according to atranslation by Agence France-Presse.

“The government has been, is and always will bewith the victims,” íñigo Méndez de Vigo, a spokesman for the government, toldreporters.

Sexual assaults have plagued the Running of theBulls festival. Women routinely report being groped, or worse. At the 2015festival, a British woman was allegedly assaulted by a group of men in abathroom.

When someone is being raped, they go into shock, which means theirbody can be collapsing, shutting down to try to survive. This may have looked likepassive acceptance, but I assure you it is not. It has happened to me. Thecourt should have made sure to get testimony from psychologists and otherprofessionals who understand what happens to the body in that situation...
I am appalled by the ignorance of the court...

The basis for this was that there was no intimidation - even thoughthe five of them had dragged her into a windowless 2.7x1 meter room. She was 18and thin - they were over 25, one of them a member of the military and another apoliceman. At one point in time she was yelling in pain while she was beingheld against the wall by two of the rapists.
They videotaped themselves raping her and sent these videos over tothe other members of “the pack”. The gang member who’s a policeman took hermobile and chucked away the sim card so that she could not react immediatelyafter they left her half-naked lying on the floor. She was also raped orallyand anally. 15 times in the space of 11 minutes.
But incredibly no intimidation therefore not rape. The court doesnot elaborate on how on earth they came to the conclusion that there was nointimidation in these circumstances, something astounding given the actualfacts of the case.
Not to mention the judge (this trial was conducted by a 3-judgepanel) who, in his dissenting vote, actually says in writing they were all justhaving a bit of fun.
Btw, all of the above facts are actually “proven facts of the case”as formulated by the sentence.
Disgust and outrage only begins to describe what any decent humanbeing must feel about this.

It's not rape unless there's violence or intimidation?
And being shoved against a brick wall isn't violence?
And being surrounded by five men isn't intimidation?
