The person who said that they wouldn't default because they can always print more money is not dumb. He's actually right. The US owes this debt in US dollars. The dollar would definitely lose its value though. Its an advantage that US has because of the dollar accepted everywhere.

it would ruin the dollar but it would still work for paying the debt. if a 100 dollars are worth 1 euro it would still count as paying back cuz the debt is in dollars.

Hmmmm.... If you were a bank and somebody continued to rack up debt and barely if ever paid down any of the principle, would you continue to lend to them?? Eventually we'll need to get this debt under control or else it WILL destroy us. In the short and medium term, bonds are pretty safe. Long term?? HELL NAW. We need to fix this shit. The Rethuglican tax cuts are antithetical to paying down the debts.

Print the debt? You mean printing 23 trillion dollars when there is "only" 1.6 trillion in circulation? That would be catastrophic, the dollars value will lower 14 times (and even more since people will not want it after it's value falls). That's not how you repay debt, that's how you crash your economy.

It's kinda different for the US though, and USD is strong enough that it can afford to lose a lot of value and still remains strong. I think only Euro, Pounds, and Swiss Franc are stronger than USD.

That's the typical american. They've forgotten the meaning of inflation.
Inflation is that you print more money, so you spread out it's value.
If you print less money, your dollar becomes more worth.
As the world get's richer, we need this inflation to spread out it's value.
But like they say... Too much of a good thing, can be bad.

Why not just balance the budget? No more tax breaks for corporations and the rich,  curb the bloated military budget and stop pork barrel spending, etc. When Clinton left office, the debt was $5 trillion and the budget nearly balanced. Another seven or eight years  and we'd have been debt free...Then along came Bush with two wars, massive tax cuts for the rich,  banking and Wall St. deregulation, and the debt tripled to $15 trillion.  Now we have Trump - who's gone bankrupt six times, and had more failed businesses than you have toes.. Lord help us...

为什么不平衡一下预算呢？不要再给企业和富人减税、免税，控制臃肿的军事预算，停止猪肉桶开支等等。当克林顿卸任时，美国债务为5万亿美元，预算接近平衡。原本再过个七八年，我们就不用负债了。。。。。。接着，小布什搞了两次战争，对富人进行大规模的减税，对银行业和华尔街放松监管，结果债务增加了3倍，达到了15万亿美元。现在我们有了特朗普，一个已经破产六次，失败的生意让你数都数不过来的人。上帝啊帮帮我们吧。。。。。。

注释：pork barrel 猪肉桶是美国政界常用的一个词汇。南北战争前，南方种植园主家里都有几个大木桶，把日后要分给奴隶的猪肉都腌在里面。“猪肉桶”喻指人人都有一块。后来，政界把议员在国会制订拨款法案时将钱拨给自己的州（选区）或自己特别热心的某个项目的做法，叫“猪肉桶”。
