Basically Japanese and Chinese have an equally bad opinion of each other. haha but I think Chinese are far more vocal about it, Japanese are more reserved. I would also say from my experience living in Japan, most Japanese don't hate Chinese, they simply look down on them as uncultured/uncivilized. They look at China as a potential threat to Japanese security.
Chinese tend to just hate Japan because of events that happened over 70 years ago during WWII, but they also tend to like things from Japan, even if they don't like people that much.

I was an immigrant in Japan and lived there for 15 years over three stays. While I say in general the Japanese don't care much about international politics, they have formed certain opinions about the Chinese people (PRC) over time.  Some of the more obvious ones are: 
1) that they are talkative, and can be rather loud;
2) that they are opinionated, and would offer their thoughts without being asked;
3) they don't like to follow rules and will cut in lines; 
4) they are not unified as a people, and tend to have a lot of in-fighting;
5) because there are Chinese mafia types working in large cities such as Tokyo and Osaka, the Chinese also have left the impression that they can be seedy and not law-abiding citizens.
6) they are not very punctual, and sometimes show up late at work--a product of the "iron rice bowl" mentality,

Of course the Japanese know the subtle differences between a Mainland Chinese and say a Taiwanese or a Singaporean.   In general, the Japanese prefer the Taiwanese to the Mainland Chinese because Taiwan was once a colony of Japan's, and many Taiwanese quite like the Japanese people and culture too.  There are a lot of cultural sharing between Japan and Taiwan, including food habits and the hot spring culture.  In fact, if you listen closely to the Taiwanese version of Mandarin and you will find out terms such as 便当 (boxed lunch) and 风吕 (bath) are borrowed directly from the Japanese originals of "obento" and "ofuro."

There's two ways to answer this question. Firstly, as refers to government vs. government. Secondly, citizen vs. citizen.
As Haji Liu pointed out, most citizens don't care as much as the governments because the agendas are different. I live in Japan and moved here from China so have seen the agendas play out from both sides.
Most Japanese are perfectly comfortable with China's rise and appreciate the cultural similarities between the two nations. It may be perceived that Japanese frown upon certain Chinese behaviours e.g. putting feet on train seats and talking noisily, but this is not a unique observation from Japanese to Chinese. Japanese are quiet, reserved, and polite. Chinese tourists don't always behave this way when they visit Japan.
China was the no.1 out-bound tourist destination for Japanese in 2014 and for Spring Festival 2015 Japan was the no.1 out-bound destination for Chinese tourists (weaker Yen makes luxury shopping cheaper in Tokyo). Chinese visitors to Japan are up 60% yoy. 
The two nations are mingling more than ever, despite the cold relationship between the governments. In summary, I'd say most Japanese welcome the rise of China, think that Japanese society is probably a few steps ahead, but overall are somewhat ambivalent to anything beyond these superficial remarks. Of course it will vary by age group (elderly likely to be less tolerant - and Japan has a lot of old people!) but that's a general POV.

Though I am not Japanese, I think I can spare my opinion with you from my from my experience of getting along with a few Japanese. 
Most of them are cautious about Chinese government and CCP. They disfavor the policies and actions taken by the Chinese government. 
To ignore the elements of politics, Japanese usually can enjoy Chinese food( like gyoza, tenshinhan, mapo tofu...), though the taste of the Chinese food has been adapted to the taste that Japanese may favor. 
Many Japanese admire traditional Chinese culture(中华文明); someone likes to read Three Kingdoms(三国). Yet many of them think that this is not the modern China have. 
For their attitude towards Chinese, I think it various.
Most of ordinary Japanese are friendly to Chinese, I can see many examples of Japanese making friends with Chinese( I am in UK ). 
For ordianry Japanese(From the observance of comments in the website), I think the attitude of disfavor do exists, but merely due to their encounter with some disbehave tourists. 
For people like to go to websites such as 2CH, they tend to look down upon the Chinese(of course Korean are also the target). There are lots of news about rude Chinese or some news about China for the purpose of eyeball-catching. Well, my suggestion is to ignore it. There are plenty of racism comments on the website and there are plenty of racists in every countries, so just ignore it. 
As for the question that whether China and Japan can work together for the future of Asia; I think it is very unlikely in the future 10 years, since China and Japan have conflicts of interests now. They may can work together if they have a common interests or a common enemy.

Honestly, "race" and "diversity" issues(things so strongly promoted in the U.S.) immediately disappeared upon arrival to Japan. It was awesome. I was treated as an individual instead of a "race". Likely, I was probably still treated as a foreigner, but race discussions rarely came up, and most people assumed I was Japanese or Chinese anyway. I'm not Chinese, I'm Hmong, so I can't speak as a Chinese individual, but for those Japanese who thought I was Chinese, they weren't hostile towards me at all. I did meet one Chinese national, a student studying abroad in Japan who once confided to me, that she was shocked to be treated so well and with such care, kindness and consideration by the Japanese people she met during her time there. She said it completely changed her views on the Japanese.  She initially thought the Japanese were awful villains.
Oh, and one more thing, a lot of Japanese students would prefer to study the Chinese language over English, and many Japanese students are interested in the Chinese culture, but they are not allowed to study China or Chinese language because English is what is promoted in Japan.

Full disclosure at front: I am a Chinese living in North America, I speak and read Japanese.
For the stereotypical average Japanese citizen, the answer is they don't care. If you ask them this question (face-to-face... this is an important condition!), they will say something along the lines of: 
"Eh China!? I don't know much about it... It's large, food is delicious... Sorry I only know this much." (followed by apologetic laugh and deep nod several times) 
If you go on Japanese internet and have a discussion there though (let's say yahoo Japan, 2ch, or the danmaku at niconico douga), it will be a little different. While I would say the netizens don't really care either, they would come back with a range of comments along the lines of: 
"Kichiku Shina" (Kichiku - Devil animal; Shina - derogatory form of China in Japanese)
"Shina - the cancer of the world"
"Fake product country where everything blows up"
"Pakkuri thief country" (Pakkuri - copycat)
"Very low mindo" (Mindo - education or moral quality of citizen) 
"People eat toxic dirty food"
"Stop invading Senkaku! We do not tolerate it!"
"Ruled by 'Com-miserable Party'" ("共惨党"- Japanese word play on the Communist Party)
"Chinese are scary and they want to conquer the world"
"Chinese are stupid and they will kill themselves"
"The food is delicious though."
Of course, these days due to the extensive economic linkage between the two country, actually it become rather typical to meet some Japanese who is familiar with China. Their comments are likely to be:
"Life in China is quite convenient"
"China is huge!"
"Chinese are rich!"
"Chinese people are very open and friendly."
"Pollution is bad - Japan is great and that's why I'm back."

I'm not Japanese, but I have lived in Japan for several years, and speak the language at a near native level. 
When it comes to the Japanese perception of China, there is no average, it's pretty much political, and the individuals's political views (left, right, liberal, progressive ... etc) affect their perception about China.
However, and just to answer your question, I can list the most common keywords you most likely to hear  people say when it comes to China or Chinese people/products. Cheap, fake, low quality, uncivilized, emotional, angry, arrogant ... and you can notice that most of them are negative perception. 
That said, almost all Japanese people recognize the historical Chinese contributions in forming the Japanese culture through language, religion, philosophy, governance ... etc.
In modern times, there is also an increasing number of people who recognize Chinese companies as rich, competitive, dominant, and present a threat to the Japanese economy.

Who wants to be seen on a video saying Chinese products are low quality because the people are too? The only advantage China has is price..I can't think of anything else.  People in China and Japan are almost the opposite. In China it's not easy to do business because the trust factor is so low and with good reason. Often products are assumed to be fake/low quality/trick/scam. I mean this is a place where they were putting toxic fillers in their baby powdered milk because it was cheaper..what do you expect? My friend got $$ from an ATM in China and store-owners kept refusing some of it because it was fake..if you can't even get real $$ from a bank ATM, you know the trust factor is low.

In China,  people talks about 'you get what you pay for' . one type of product, you can have a different level of quality with the different price.  You can find a good product in China, it depend how much would you like to pay. Merchants mainly purchase  the cheapest products,that is one reason you see the poor quality product in your country which is made in China.  I admit, there are some issues in China, people does bad things and try to get more benefit for their business. But these behaviors are also hated by Chinese. they also punished based on Chinese law. don't  be exaggerated because the negative news you heard.

My family is Japanese. I was not born in Japan though. My general perception is that social etiquettes that originated in the Heian period fucked the Japanese society completely. It's like christian priests leashing their sexuality and , as a result, developing bizarre sexual deviations. The practical result in Japan of this deviation is the general unhappiness and a bunch of suicides, In summary, there's a silent repression and Japanese people deal with it by ignoring it and, consequently, reinforcing this repression. People should accept their deep perversions, instead ,and live peacefully with them instead of simply repressing it. The Chinese are way more happier.

@Haruka ino China has also more people living there. In any case, I'm certainly not anti-Japanese. Except for the sociological aspects (which resembles a communist country), Japan is maybe the best country out there to live in my opinion. Of course, the fast leap in modernization in China destroyed the environment and brought poverty to some rural areas, but this has nothing to do with culture or tradition. Nationalism just incite xenophoby and violence. Of course, no one should repress it like in Germany, otherwise the extreme right wing will  attract more followers. But embracing it is also not a good option.
