Taiwan is once again interested in purchasing Abrams tanks from the United States.

This week the Hong Kong–based South China Morning Post reported that Taiwan’s Minister of National Defense, Yen Teh-fa, told a legislative panel that Taipei is still interested in purchasing U.S.-made M1A2 Abrams tanks. Citing Taiwan’s United Daily News, South China Morning Post said that Taiwan’s Defense Ministry is initially interested in buying two battalions (or 108) of M1A2 tanks. Ultimately, the Taiwanese military hopes to purchase even more tanks from Washington.

本周香港南华早报报道台湾国防部长称台湾仍然有意购买美国制造的M1A2坦克。台湾国防部原本有意购买108辆，最终台湾军队希望购买更多。

Yen said that the tanks would provide the last line of defense against a Chinese invasion. Besides immediately improving Taiwan’s combat readiness, he indicated that the sale would also involve technology transfers that could enhance the country's domestic arms industry.

Here's what would do to deter China invasion if I'm the head Taiwan Pres.: have as many long & short range missiles aim across the water toward China strategic locations. Any fighting breakout I would order an "all at once" launching the missiles simultaneously. Let China knows that casualties will be catastrophic on its shoulder. China cannot shoot down all missles in swarm attacks.

The more we give to Taiwan to defend themselves, the less the US will need to help them in an invasion. Taiwan simply needs to make the cost of invasion too high for China to try. Give them enough anti-ship, anti-aircraft, and anti-tank weapons and it will be very hard for China to invade. Taiwan would be better served to get 10000 TOW missiles over M1 tanks.

The M1 might be a bit too heavy for Taiwanese terrain and road infrastructure. They'd probably be better off with something more suited for islands. Japan's new Type 10 MBT was designed to be relatively light for that reason, yet it still has cutting edge armor and weapons. Maybe try negotiating a sale with them?
