One of the members of a Kpop group was raised in Canada. She's frequently asked to speak English... she often has to affect a Korean accent in order to be understood.

As a native English speaker I used to live in Latin America in a place where all the street names were in English. I feel her pain.
Trying to say "French avenue" like it was Spanish drove me mental. Cab drivers never understood me.

There are a lot of Spanish street names in Los Angeles where people won't understand you if you pronounce them correctly. Sepulveda is a big one.

Haha her tone makes her come off as if she's getting annoyed having to keep switching accents.

When visiting Japan people definitely had an easier time understanding US cities and names if said with a bit of Japanese accent.
"Boston."
"... ...Austen?"
"Bo-sue-ton."
"Ahh Bosueton!"
(Bosueton)!”

Had a Japanese ESL roommate for four years and I always felt guilty when catching myself subconsciously phrasing things in broken English so he could readily understand me.
UnknwnSoldier 2.2k points·6 hours ago
No need to feel guilty if you're just optimizing communication and not mocking him (and he doesn't feel mocked). I had a whole slew of Ukrainian in-laws for many years and I had to do the same thing with heavily accenting my English to be understood by some of them. It's fine.

I agree it comes down to what the other person wants. With older people they don't really have a hope of perfecting their accent so it is just a pain. But I had a lot of exchange students in high school and college that appreciated small corrections at the right time and learning new words.

Can confirm. Just returned from Japan a few weeks ago and an interaction I specifically remember was asking for the check.
"Check please"
"Nani?"
"Uh Chekku kudasai"
"Ohhhhh"
(Chekku kudasai)”
wishthane 298 points·5 hours ago
Me too. Funny memory I was trying to learn what people normally say and looking it up in the dictionary (stuff like okanjou onegai shimasu) - but then I was at a bar and this drunk (Japanese) guy just goes and says 'chekku de' and that's all and I laughed because I went to all this effort and could have just tried saying 'chekku'.

It definitely feels weird to us but to them these words are effectively Japanese words (or Korean words or whatever) with the all the phonetic rules that go with their native language. Though they may be English in origin when the speakers learned them they learned them with all the rules from their language.

This story may be apocryphal so take it for what it's worth. A buddy of mine told me about an acquaintance of his Korean-American guy. For whatever reason this guy despite being an American citizen and under no obligation to do so decides to join the Korean Army.
Now this guy's Korean is pretty good and he can pass but he brings American attitude to a hyper hierarchical organization within an already hyper hierarchical culture. His superiors do not like him.
His drill sergeant calls him over points to something and asks him what it is.
He answers in Korean:"Sir it's the..." with an American affectation "...Emergency Override."
Sergeant kicks him in the stomach. "E-MUH-JEHN-SSHI O-BEUH-RAH-I-DEUH YAH!"
Welcome to the army!
“是E-MUH-JEHN-SHI-O-Buuh RHi-i-Duh yay。”

The host Leeteuk from Super Junior asking her the questions works for the same record label as her. He is aware her (Wendy) group is Red Velvet and the song she is being asked about is called Russian Roulette. He is trolling her because it’s probably an inside joke at the company that the western born idols have to accent some words for them to be understood. This is all in fun because Amber (the girl in the middle of the first clip) loses her shit when Wendy says “wonderful world” in accented English and Amber was raised in the US.

Though tbf Leeteuk's English is very bad.

Yeah I'm a French guy leaving in Korea my name is Raphaël but Korean language doesn't have the R sound or the F sound. So now I am Lapael from Peulangsse.

A friend of mine is a doctor and he uses a fake accent when talking to philipino patient because they understand it better even if he doesn't speak their language. He did the same for Spanish too before he learned to speak it enough for patients. It's as much the simplified words as it is the accent. Saying "how are you today mrs Hernandez can you explain to me where the pain and how long it's been like that" does't work as well as "Senora where hurt?"
说“how are you today mrs Hernandez can you explain to me where the pain and how long it's been like that(赫尔南德斯女士,你今天感觉怎么样啊?

Yeah you can see when she gives up and just does the accent. Totally cute.

This is part of why knetizens dont love wendy but part of why i adore her. She doesnt fit into the standard of typical english speaking koreans she isnt arrogant about her english nor does she play it up like most idols do.
