China's first domestically manufactured aircraft carrier started sea trials Sunday, state media said, a landmark in Beijing's ambitious plans to modernise its navy as the Asian giant presses its claims in disputed regional waters.
The carrier, known only as "Type 001A", set out for the trials from a port in northeastern China at around 6.45 am (2245 GMT Saturday), according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Footage aired by CCTV showed the imposing ship accompanied by several smaller military craft leaving a wharf and heading out to sea under grey skies.
It is the first time the carrier's engine, propulsion and navigation systems will be tested at sea, state media said, a year after the vessel first took to the water at its official launch.
Expected to be commissioned by 2020, the ship will give China a second aircraft carrier to beef up its navy as it asserts its claims in the disputed South China Sea and seeks to deter any independence movements in Taiwan.

The planes carry fewer weapons because they don’t have enough room to accelerate to normal takeoff speed not so that they can carry more fuel for takeoff. Honestly people know something about what you are writing about!

"China's defence budget rose 8.1 percent to 1.1 trillion yuan ($175 billion) in 2018, but it is still only about one-quarter that of the United States." Yeah that what China tells us, but do you believe that ? Im sure they spend MUCH more.

China's defense budget is 1/4 ours but they don't pay $50-$75 an hour for workers counting benefits or pay companies a 25%-30% profit mark-up. There spending isn't near as far behind us as numbers would indicate.

would last 5 minutes vs. a US carrier battle group

Aircraft carriers are vulnerable without a full battle group. If a U.S. battle group approaches their aircraft carrier, they would have to raise a white flag or face a grim reality.

United States first aircraft carrier was the USS. Langley (CV-1) commissioned in 1922. China's got a bit of catching up to do... 96 years to be exact.

at least it is a good start. one must learn to walk before one runs. conventional powered ones are good enough for defense as it doesn't need to travel very far anyways. about the food load or not is dependent on the type of plane. chinese j15 ? is specially designed for carrier use while you dont see them in normal air force.

China doesn't need a lot of big nuclear carriers . Unlike the US , Chinese carriers are for homeland defense , not world domination.

China does not reveal its true military budget, which is a state secret. Much of its military's budget is hidden in the profits made by businesses controlled by its military, which gets to keep those profits to spend on equipment, stealing U.S. technology, and paying for foreign technology purchases. So this "fact" isn't real.

Built WAY too FAST with Chinese materials and from technology stolen from others, I don't believe this vessel will be having too much success in it's short life! Remember the LAST TRUE Chinese invention was gunpowder in the 6th Century! Today, the Chinese rarely "think outside" the BOX, the BOX, i.e., restrictions put on them by their Communist MASTERS!
