Civilian surveillance in China has seen a boom in recent times, with facial recognition leading the charge in the technologies used to keep tabs on the population. Police are scanning travelers with facial recognition glasses, authorities are using the tech to monitor ethnic minorities -- now the Orwellian technology has a new target: kids. According to government-run Chinese website Hangzhou.com, a school has installed facial recognition technology to monitor how attentive students are in class.

平民监视近来在中国蓬勃发展，而在监视大众的这些技术中，面部识别系统占据着主导地位。警方用面部识别眼镜扫描游客，而当局使用这个技术监视少数民族，现在这个奥威尔式的技术有了一个新用途：孩子。根据政府网站杭州网报道，一所学校安装了面部识别系统用以监视学生们在课堂里是否专心听课。

Three cameras have been installed above a blackboard at Hangzhou Number 11 High School in eastern China. The system identifies seven different facial expressions -- neutral, happy, sad, disappointed, angry, scared and surprised -- to determine whether children are focused on their lessons, and if they're not, the computer will feed this back to the teacher. So far the technology is in just one classroom, but will roll out across the school by the summer.

China's government wants TOTAL CONTROL. This is just part of it, facial recognition will be use in class room and monitor every students. If any students show outstanding performance, they will be put into special classes and work for government. No Freedom to choose, either work for government or pay the consequences unless those students belong to rich families or companies with government connection.

@jeffo Not like US, US still subject to media's attention and how citizens react. China has none of that, anyone against anything will be put to ReEducation Center or jail. So Despite all the shadow actions from US, US still has more FREEDOM and CHOICES.

@Trumpenstein BS? For DECADES, China collect all the smartest and brightest children and hide them in special section like Cyber Espionage. The US also do this, but not as much CONTROL as China. China only has CONTROLLED, they have copy version of Google, Facebook, Twitter and more, all share information with the government. You think that still BS that China wants CONTROL?

How can be sure of a facial expression? Can you fake it? Some people's facial expression is misinterpreted. I know I have done this myself. This is very strange.

Never mind the conditioning these kids are being forced to submit to, why in just a few generations the kids will not question it at all. CONTROL is what it is all about.

People wonder why our kids can't regurgitate answers like in other countries. If you allow the government to decide who goes to high school and who goes to trade school and removes parents from being able to fight that decision, the US would get higher standardized test scores. Now, ask citizens if they are willing to give up that power? I didn't think so, so stop complaining about US test scores.

@ Dan - "revolutionize the education process", eh?.. You can have the best, most intelligent and caring teachers, technology, etc. but you can't force knowledge into kids' heads. Those who don't care and don't have any interest in learning or doing well, won't. And let's be real: not every kid has a brain able to do well in school and college. Maybe for some, trade school is the best answer - better then wasting a ton of resources, a disproportionate amount of the teachers' time in high school on a child who will still never be able to do well in college. All the while that child will be dragging down the children around him.

你可以拥有最好的老师和技术，但是你无法将知识强硬灌进学生的脑袋。不喜欢学习的学生是不可能学习成绩好的。而且并不是每个学生都适合坐在课堂里学习。或许对于某些学生来说，技校才是最好的答案，这比让中学里的老师浪费大量资源和时间在一个不可能学好的孩子身上强。而且让这些不想学习的学生进入中学的话，也也影响到其他学生的学习。
