In a high school theater in Arcadia, Calif., Amber Zhang and the rest of the teenage cast of a production of Molière's comedic play The Miser gather in a tight circle.
"Everyone say, 'Hey, hey, hey!' " bellows Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo, an instructor at Arroyo Pacific Academy. "Helloooo!"
Zhang, cast as a spunky ingénue, throws her body — and pipes — into the exercise.
"In China, if we have class, for sure we sit down on a chair," says Zhang, 17, who grew up in Guangzhou. She's an only child whose parents, both doctors, sent her to the U.S. for high school. Back home, there was "not a lot of time to have fun like this."

Zhang belongs to a growing population of Chinese teens leaving the test-driven, high-pressure world of schools back home for the U.S. — more than 23,000 at last count, according to the Institute of International Education. Their goal is to better their children's chances of getting into an American college; a degree earned in the U.S. carries a lot of weight.

At the same time, these students — often called "parachute kids" — enjoy the looser contours of an American education, one that students like Zhang say lets them be more creative and independent.

They do this to get residency so as to pay in state tuition. They often buy a family house for their child while the parents still live in China. Its messing up the housing market for working families in CA as these Chinese families are paying in all cash for top dollar

Money is still being circulated. I don't see your point. If anything, the Chinese have to spend loads more (conversion rate to dollar is abysmal). Really, the housing market (the free market) is a buyer's market. It doesn't discriminate against who "deserves" it more.

Maybe American children's academic performance would improve significantly, if they had more exposure to Chinese children, and other Asians. Heaven knows, they sure need it.

We get the point bernese, you've responded multiple times to sayaka. Now, you seem like the one that's riled up. And way to go off topic: industrial espionage? They're high school students. Pollution? No mention of it in the article. They're like any other wealthy kid. They had the opportunity to study abroad and they went for it. We don't shame Americans who study abroad in Europe, so we shouldn't shame them either.
If anything, I see it as great way for both Americans and the Chinese to learn more about each other's cultures and lessen any misunderstandings they might have. But no, apparently all the goodness you can see in this amounts to "espionage", "the bad habits of communism"

Only in America can we suddenly jump at the conclusion that a teenager from a communist country is automatically a spy. Xenophobia at its best. Ironic since it's coming from a country that is known to be one of the most diverse hotspots in the world.

I wonder how many are the children and grandchildren of high party officials, and how many are the children and grandchildren of the newly rich in China. In any event, it can only help us to have these kids, and their tuition dollars, coming to the US for school. It will promote better relations with China's future leaders, and bring in the best and the brightest from China.

Same thing as Japanese students in the 80s and 90s. Only the the students who couldn't make it in Japan(those who couldn't even get in a 3rd rate Japanese college) come to the US to get a college diploma.

Here in Ojai, Ca we have many private boarding schools, allowing students of many ages to diversify our student population. My kids even learned to speak some Chinese and have formed solid friendships. We have a few, now local, foreign students who stayed to marry and raise families of their own. Now their children attend local schools. Its quite nice to see our big world come together. As far as moving away to go study abroad, yes it can be a big change. But for the majority it is middle to high school.
