Is China hated by the west or liked?
Mo Chen, lives in China (1989-present)
Hated, liked, doesn’t bother me at all. It isn’t a perfect place, and I know this the best living here for so long.
What bothers me is the misinformed talking about something I know a lot about.
I have much experience in talking to westerners coming to China. The most thing I heard about, is that:
“Wow, you guys have xxx?!”
xxx can be trains, planes, cars, tar roads, shopping malls, starbucks, iphone, smart phone, books, lakes, paper, whatever. You get the idea.
In 2013, An engineer from Georgia, USA, first time ever in his life to come to China, confessed to me that, he had imagined China to be CCP policemen everywhere, armored cars loaded with machine guns eyeballing every pedestrian everywhere, but no.
Chinese police force is underfunded and understaffed, and you do not feel the CCP presence on a day to day basis. He saw people drinking on the poorly improvised food street with barbaque and beer, singing laughing, having a good time, he was impressed by this. This was not some mega cities of China, this is Nantong. If you do not know this place, it’s fine, it doesn’t have international reputation like Shanghai, or Beijing, or Shenzhen.
Working with these Americans as translator was a great experience for me. They work so hard and are very intellegible. They work like grease monkeys but are also computer guru who reads and draws designs so well. I had high respects for them. They asked a bunch of “Is it true that…” questions to me, which I am very happy to answer. When I depart, I gave each of them bamboo paintings that can be rolled and hang in their houses as gifts, they liked it so much.
When I was even younger, a British English teacher had told me that when he was first assigned to China in 2002, he was expecting cows, people with bamboo hats farming, and mud roads in Shanghai. But no.
Shanghai dazzled him. To quote his own words, if you take a photo of downtown Shanghai, cover all the billboards with Chinese Characters on, and show it to a westerner telling this is street of New York, no one would question you. This guy bought a house in China and lives here for decades now.
Do they like China, hate China, doesn’t bother me.
What bothers me is how much misinformation is being fed to the masses in the west.
Jerry Mc Kenna, I have voted in the US since 1972
I will answer from a US perspective. The US ‘hates’ China. Not as much as Russia, but more than a typical US politician hates Europe. The US likes countries that do what it says. The US doesn’t like countries that stand up to it. So, in the last 70 years we have often hated France.
I have always assumed that Nixon wanted China to counter balance the Soviet unx and given that era, he had no expectation that China would grow rapidly.
The US wants China to be a happy little consumer of US products, China sees things differently. China understands the difference between finances and real wealth. They never had any intention of sending their growing income to the US. None of their policies is irrational.
Everyone cheats. Volkswagen cheated on air pollution tests. So, China cheats too. China is bigger so it is more significant, but it isn’t only different in degree. Business is always in some way about finding minor advantages and making a killing. Bill Gates go rich because IBM needed to get its PCs to market quickly and they signed a deal that gave him a lot of money.
I think people are afraid of the rise of China, but in the case of the US much of that fear is misplaced. We have forgotten to invest in this country. We have sent work to China and are surprised that the Chinese took advantage of this opportunity. If the US has real wealth it is in the ability to get the most out of its population. Anyone who knows about WWII understands what that meant. Today we want to make high profits without effort. It just isn’t possible.
We need to invest in the US, not contract Chinese companies to build things for US. You cannot blame China for our issues.
Chien-Sheng Tsai, former Coolie
I would say that China is begrudged by the West, more so than hated or liked.
It is true that many express hatred of China and Chinese, but such folks are mostly the uneducated and ignorant--Trump expressed the same sentiments while campaigning and prior to the meeting with Xi. But now Trump is walking back because he realizes that he had better change his tune to avoid peeing on himself.
Many look down on China and Chinese goods, but they still buy because what is the alternative? China is much in the news because of its huge impact on global trade and economy. The rapid transformation of China is unprecedented in world history.
The Japanese are upset that they were overtaken as the world's second largest economy, even more so as they realized that the new pecking order would likely remain, unless something catastrophic happens to China. They hope for a disaster and are trying to sabotage China as best they can (at least Abe's administration is), but The Sick Man of Asia, as the Japanese liked to refer to China in the past, has recovered--and he is saying, I'm OK, You're OK, so let's make a deal.
The Europeans, who had humiliated China in the past centuries, are finding that China is surpassing them in many areas, and they need the China market for their goods and services, as well as needing Chinese goods and services. None of the European luxury goods purveyors, from cars to bags and perfume, et al., can survive without the China market. They may not like the Chinese, but need to make nice or else. The pendulum has swung, ding dong, wing, wong.
So they begrudgingly lay out the welcome mat and put up with the sour taste in their mouths, but stop short of an embrace. Congratulations on your success, Mr. Wong, hope to attend your funeral soon.

more like pitied and looked down on because they don't accept enlightened western ideals on democracy and human rights (that the west generally don't seem to believe in themselves when push comes to shove )
Now the backward Asians are getting rich , influential and powerful, it makes so sense and hurts white feelings of superiority.
It often disappoints white people when they go to a non western democracy and it's not a banana republic for them to feel good about themselves .
caveat lector
Not all whites are like that . But enough exist to create stories , sayings , memes like these
