Japan invaded and occupied many countries including china Korea, Russia and etc. As a Korean citizen I can only best speak from my position. When they occupied Korea, they did pretty darn violent things. Ranging from mass shootings of innocents, to human experiments on par with hitler, taking women as sex slaves and so on. In addition to that the occupation by japan is basically the reason for our separation. When America and the soviet freed this land they split it, creating north and south Korea. If this country were never occupied this would have never happened. So you can thank japan for Kim jong un. Of course, past is past and the current citizens of japan are innocent of those crimes. However, the current government denies any past crimes they can, do not apologize in any way, give official prayers to war criminals and still try unbelievably blatantly to claim islands from 4 or 5 countries at the same time(including korea), when it is clear, that they do not have the right to a single one when you do the research. They do not even want to see the unification of the korean peninsula (even though it is their fault that we are sperated in the first place) because north Korea is the perfect excuse for building an war ready army. Clearly for aggressive purposes.(Note that the stay funnily silent whenever news of possible peace comes along and cry out warnings of anger whenever northkorea even moves a finger) An apology and a compensation for the individual victims is all anybody ever asked for. Germany did it and nobody holds a grudge. The government is unbelievably shameless and the citizens do not seem to care either.

They invaded Korea (a unified country at that time) and made the women sex slaves for the soldiers posted down Southeast Asia.
I think we all know what happened at Pearl harbour.
Then they took over the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia etc.
And then they went down to Malaya, where the British lost Singapore.
As a Singapore citizen, I feel compelled to elaborate.
To punish the local Chinese for supporting the resistance movement in China, at least 50 000 Chinese were gunned to death in the Sook Ching Massacre.

Because Japan push Chinese into the most miserable days We can remember down to data. We should feel thorough sympathy on the victims under all the massacre in Chinese history, no one can imagine those people is so much desperate and hopeless when him was not immersed in such a bad situation.
However, I don’t like to hate the people and the country directly, We need to always remember such a lesson that a country and its people need to be stronger and smarter not to easily abandon our government, not to suppress others just by mouse and vicious words, we need to develop our economy, technology, and culture to make them admire us not from the face, but from the heart.
Hopefully In the future, I would glad to see we Chinese will think the miserable history just a deep lesson while not hate Japanese any more, To All the people all over the world, I hopefully They also take a lesson that war will not bring happiness and respect while gain long time hatred ,
Let Chinese ,Japanese, Korea take together to build modern economy and culture in East Asia, Let us restore our long time prosperity and friendship during the ancient 2000 years. East Asia ever be, could be, and should be the center of the world.

If you recall a thing called WWII, the Japanese didn’t stop with attacking Pearl Harbor. They attacked every Asian country with an Anglo presence. And when they expelled the French, English and Americans, they occupied these countries. Their occupations were not particularly gentle. The Korean women were forced into prostitution for the Japanese Army and called them Comfort Girls. That is a difficult thing to forget. It may take another few generations. They have fought Russia and defeated them in 1905. Memories can be long and I think that is the real problem. Japan of course is an economic power house and they are aggressive in the market place. They have dominated Asia economically until the last 20 years or so and China has passed them. They will dwarf them in a generation. Just like they will dwarf us eventually.

Not sure about russia but japan did invade and did occupy china and both koreas. Lots of atrocities were done so its no wonder there is lingering resentment. But the generation that was alive during and after ww2 will soon all be dead of old age.
Interestingly, current japanese-philippine relations are good even if the philippines was also invaded and atrocities were done too.
I am from the Philippines. Why the diff? Well the philippines is a more forgiving culture, being poorer it responds more positively to the aid japan has given us, and japan was here only a few years so it did less atrocities. And other reasons

I don’t know about Russia, but within living memory Japan invaded, enslaved, and murdered millions of people in Korea, much of China, the Philippines, Malaysia, and others during World War II.

Japan was once a nation that did nasty things. They sought conquest through war and bloodshed and had little sympathy for anyone in other countries. And ever since then, successive Japanese governments have covered up and denied that these events ever occurred. Many (actually all) of the countries in question suffer from serious corruption and hardcore repression (except South Korea) and cannot give their citizens optimal living standards. So whose fault is that? It of course is Japan's, therefore just forget our misdeeds. Anti-Japanese propaganda is less common in Russia though, where the narrative is that Japan is a proxy state of the US.

Because Japan fought or invaded those countries, humiliated them, treated the locals as subhuman, enslaved them, slaughtered them, etc. Aside from that, I can’t imagine why.
