For the leadership and media, China is a usefull villain. Second only to Russia in recent times.
As for the general populace, I would say neither. Most westerners are indiferent towards China. There are some who are interested in the country long and rich culture, while a few are outright Sinophiles, but most only see china as a label on a product, “Made in China”, which usually infers cheap or low quality, but nothing that would ignite hatefull feelings.

I think this is a complex issue. There are things american like about China and others they dislike. I will post polls from the EU if I can find them. I suspect the US billionaire class are green with envy.

Too broad a question. Why? Because the “West” includes too many continents and countries: Europe, some of Asia, and No. America. West includes Switzerland, the US, probably Israel, all European countries, No. America, Australia and maybe others. The Swiss and the Scandinavian countries have little concern over China. Israel, likewise. The US is concerned, because it has national interests in SE Asia, Japan and Korea. And the US is shamefully in financial debt to China, a vast debt that increases each year and one the US cannot repay.
In the same manner, few like China, but Tibet probably hates China. And the US probably fears China because China is such an overwhelming creditor or and because the US fears Chinese aggression in SE Asia. China is a potential enemy that the US could not defeat in Asia.

I am always astounded by the self righteousness of the Americans to decide who we should like or dislike. Often the greed factor is badly concealed, but who cares. And it is amazing how often their highly emotional laden interventions create more chaos and devastation, more suffering and pain. This same haplessness to do the morally right thing, (this could be the a Wrong inference), apply today towards China. There is a liberal press that tries it best to buy the goodwill of the Chinese leaders, a president who wants to level the trade playing field. And the average US person who really only have time to work for living, or consume drugs and is totally ignorant about China. For an outsider looking at the current chaos in the US that is called democracy is frightening, if not, a complete joke. They elect a president legally, now they dedicate all their time and effort trying to get rid of him. Wow what a proud testimony for the type of democracy the US wants to force upon the rest of the world.
The West does not hate China. Please understand that, we do not understand them and we all fear the unknown. In the same way as we do not understand Africans, or Russians or Germans and especially Americans. The US portray So much hate by their actions, clearly illustrated when Clinton said “we came we kill.” That is a brilliant epitaph for a country who judge others based on the premise of a fair legal system, civil liberties and human rights. This chaotic type of democracy we do not need. Please note that China is very pleasant and peaceful despite a so-called heavy handed government. The choice is very easy to make.

China the people we like. China the history culture and country we like. China the regime we despise. That distinction is huge. We view the Chinese people as oppressed by its government. We do not blame the people for this. But we defend Taiwan, the fee part of China for the same reason. If China ever became free, we would all be very happy. We want China to be successful but not the current regime.
They don’t hate you, they don’t like you either - they just don’t respect you - they view you with a paternalistic contempt which suggests you can’t behave or run yourselves without guidance from the west (the white man…) and the day you do accept the west (the white man…) as master and a guide - you’ll all be better for it, even if you are happy at the present - it’s the happiness of a child who wants to eat chocolate three times a day and needs an adult to feed them vegetables and fruit - it doesn’t matter that you are doing far better than they are at the moment - you’re still doing it wrong and you deserve utter contempt on the back of it.

As an American, I would say that it is a love–hate relationship. We love to do business with China. As an American, I have purchased cheap Chinese goods and plan to continue to do so. However, there is some hate going on because of China building artificial islands in the South China Sea and its unnecessarily-complicated relationship with North Korea, as well as it being a one-party state. In short, it’s complicated. We’re frenemies.
As an American, he completely ignores his countries dalliances on the global geo-political circuit and them sticking their nose and bombing/invading half the planet - he takes offence at Chinese police actions off their coast and on their land borders - hypocrisy bathed around a paternalistic contempt - do as we say, not as we do. Still, it’s not all bad as you have your uses, you’re good at making cheap shite because he is too tight to pay full price for something made in America. That must gladden your heart, surely.
You might think when you read critical posts from Americans on Chinese police actions off their own coast (as well as Tibet) is how do they have the nerve and the bare face to criticise anyone else? And the answer is… I have no idea! You would think they were actually Finns or Norwegians and not from a country that has bombed and invaded most of the planet.
A conservative replied to a post of mine (which you’re at liberty to read…) about Asian Americans and they’re not hated in America ‘oh no, we like them, they’re the model minority’ which translates to ‘they’re good n*****’ which is what a lot of them have took the place of. Asian Americans will be OK as long as they stay the ‘model minority’ but if they ever slip their high standards and start acting more like white people - then they will be reminded of their non-whiteness very very quickly.
