At the start of last year, China announceda new revolution. A toiletrevolution. The plan was to bring thecountry's bathroom facilities, long the butt of tourists' jokes, up to thestandards of the international traveller. Tens of thousands of newpublic toilets were to be constructed, while old toilets would berenovated; all at a total cost billed at more than 12.5 billionyuan ($1.9 billion).

去年年初，中国宣布一场新的革命。厕所革命。目的是为了将这个国家为游客所诟病的厕所设施提升到国际游客的水准。成千上万个新的厕所如雨后春笋拔地而起，而一些老旧的厕所也得到了翻新；这个费用超过了125亿元。

Yet the problem wasn't just the facilities:Authorities think that bathroom etiquette may need to be adjusted, withpunishments meted out for bad behavior. On Wednesday, China's national tourismregulator suggested that the "toilet revolution" could see thosewho misbehave in public bathrooms blacklisted from the facilities.

然而问题不仅仅只在于设施这一块：当局认为厕所的礼仪也可能需要得到调整，对不良行为进行惩罚。周三，中国国家旅游局说在公厕里行为不文明的人将被列入公厕黑名单。

"Many people spend a lot of timedressing themselves, but they do not spare a second to flush the toilet,"Li Shihong, deputy chief of the China National Tourism Administration (NTA),was quoted assaying in China Daily. "Toilet civilization has a long way to go inChina."

“很多人花大量时间打扮自己，但是就是不愿意花一秒钟冲厕所，”《中国日报》援引国家旅游局副局长李世宏的花说。“在厕所文明上中国还有很长的路要走。”

If you travel to China, you want to sampletheir food but it is weird enough that on occasion you desperately need aMcDonald's. If using a tourist group, insist that before hand, they know whichMcDonald's wash rooms have a toilet and which ones only have a hole in thefloor. You have to be specific, using a picture because a lot of Chinese think ofa hole in the floor as a toilet. If you don't do this and you try to squat, itdoes not work. People growing up in the free world don't have the leg musclesto squat when having a bowel movement. Whether China or Italy, there sometimesis a rope overhead but it is not lowered close enough for you to grab it.

如果你去中国旅游，你想尝一下他们的食物，但是奇怪的时候有时候你非常的想去麦当劳。如果你参加的是旅游团，那么你要确保旅游团知道哪些麦当劳卫生间是有马桶的，哪些只是在地上有个洞而已。所以你要具体一点，用图片来说明，因为很多中国人认为地上有个洞就是马桶了。你蹲着拉便便是行不通的。排便时，在自由世界长大的人们不具备蹲坐的腿部肌肉。不管是在中国还是意大利，有时候他们的厕所上方有一条绳子，但是不够低，所以你抓不到。

I don't have the urge to ever visit China.As a young boy, my parents took me to the beach in Vietnam.  
As I lay i the still water, a human fecal logapproached. I jumped out of the water as fast as I could. I was only 3 and itis the my second youngest memory.

我没有去中国游玩的冲动。在我还是小男孩时，我父母带我去了越南的沙滩。

that why chinese yuan is just as good astoilet paper, it handy to pull out of the wallet and it doesnt need to flushit, other can collect and re-uses, simple.

所以说人民币像厕纸一样好用，很方便的就可以从钱包里抽出来，而且没有必要冲，其他人可以搜集起来再利用，简单。

I am happy we are improving in China. Weare doing much better than many other countries around the world. Thank you forall you encouragement and support. We want to have toilet paper in every seat, flatscreen TV in front of every stand, water in every bowls............

Good luck to China. It is difficult tochange a culture where public urination by men and boys is considered ok. I sawmany a woman on a rice paddy dike squatting over the paddy cutting out themiddleman. This is just Asia, or was when I was in Korea 73-76. A benjo orbanjo consisted of two 1/4 to 3/8" sections of plywood laid over abubbling cauldron, usually a large section of concrete drain pipe. One wouldsquat & balance precariously on this, hoping for the best. When the"honey wagon" would come by and clean these periodically it hung inthe air, breathing through you mouth just left an after taste. The stench wasunreal, as were the rice paddies in July or August. When I lived out on theeconomy I demanded a Western style toilet - a horrible and unnecessary expenseaccording to my Korean wife. I will note that Koreans who used US facilities onbase (including said wife) would climb up and squat on the toilet seat, leavingworn foot tracks on the seat. The best I saw was a porcelain slit in the floor,that dropped directly into a buried inlet to the local creek that flowedthrough the ville. I wish them well. This is not looking down on Asian people,I met some of the toughest, most moral, and smartest people I ever knew inKorea. You just can't expect to graft Western culture on them in a couplegenerations. Nor possibly should we.

祝中国好运。在中国，男人和男孩可以随地小便，这种文化要得到改变是很难的。我看过很多妇女直接蹲坐在稻田里解决问题。这就是亚洲，或者说这就是73-76年我所在的韩国。那时，他们用两个三合板直接架在一个大锅上（一般来说是一块很大的水泥排泄管）。然后人们就蹲坐在上面排便，还要小心翼翼的进行平衡。然后拉粪的车会来搜集走。呼吸了那个空气后，真是口有余味。那恶臭真的是令人难以忍受，和七八月份的稻田里所发出的味道一样。当我住在韩国时我要求获得一个西式的马桶厕所——在我的韩国妻子看来，这是一个可怕的不必要的开销。当时，我看到韩国人（包括上诉妻子）在使用美国厕所设备时会站上去蹲坐在马桶座上，所以马桶上都是脚印。我见过的他们最好的厕所就是在地板上开一个瓷的裂缝，然后直接排泄到当地的一条小河里去，而这条河流过整个城镇。我祝愿他们一切都好。这不是在贬低亚洲人，我在韩国见过我所见过的最坚强，最道德和最聪明的人。你无法在几代人的时间里将西方文化移植到他们身上。而我们也不应该这么做。
