China’s movie box office just smashed the world’s seven-day sales record for a single territory, racking up an astonishing $548 million in ticket sales over the Chinese New Year’s holiday period, plus Valentine’s Day on Sunday.

The record gross crushes the prior record set by North America six weeks ago, when Star Wars: The Force Awakens lifted the territory to $529.6 million from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.

The record one-week haul also is considerably more than the Chinese box office generated for the entire year just one decade ago. In 2006, China’s total box office was approximately $327.5 million.

I love the story "A Journey to the West" I've seen the trailer to this film, and they did a great job with the special effects such as the fight scenes, or Sun Wukong takes a strand of his hair to create a new fighting staff. I love the story of when Sun Wukong challenges the scholar to be a man if they're going to be tasked with bring some sacred writings back to china. It's a pity they don't make a good enough adaption of this story in the USA.

How can something be called a *World-wide* record when 99% of the viewers were from one specific country that also happened to make the movie? Chinese movies very rarely are ever watched internationally in the theater generally due to very few non Chinese around the world speak Mandarin and generally lack subtitles until the movie hits DVD IF even they ever get subtitles. Yet Hollywood movies are huge around the world in most developed countries including China.
Plus in Chinese if purchase online you can get a movie ticket for about $2-3 equivelent and the snacks are far cheaper then in the US. I'm betting Hollywood would have far more moviegoers if tickets were similar price and snacks the same.

No surprise - there's almost 1.4 billion people in China, a fraction of that would easily bring in that type of money or more; Now do the math on how many American's it would take to accumulate the same sales.

I thought that this new Monkey King was suppose to be released in the US last summer. It opened in Hong Kong but got mediocre reviews but I am curious. I have seen other versions of the monkey king story. This one was made by Sou Cheang who is a very good director of suspense films and produced by Johnnie Too so I am curious. Good or not so good would like to see the film.

Good make-up jobs on the Monkey King though! That old story has been adapted countless times, for instance the Japanese anime Dragon Ball series is loosely based on the Monkey King legend.

Hey Demarcus Cousins, this is why people are trying to pander to Chinese New Year. Are you still offended that the Year of the Monkey made so much money for this movie?

I'm surprised it made that much money. I thought it would be pirated like crazy since it was made in China. And US made two versions of this story. First one was a TV Movie starring Thomas Gibson from Dharma and Greg as the main role and it was called The Lost Empire(2001). And a movie was made starring Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Michael Angarano called The Forbidden Kingdom(2008).

Surprising that if it makes that much money in China, it would be world-renowned. However, we don't get to see the movie in the USA? In fact, why haven't I ever heard of the Monkey King?

Very misleading title. It's actually a total of all the films versus one.

$548 million is a pathetic figure considering the country has a population of 1.3 billion. If the United States had such a population then Star Wars opening week would have been over $2 billion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Chinese don't celebrate the Western worlds version of valentines day. They have the Qixi festival based on their own mythology/culture.
