I'm in China for this half of this month. Man. These cities' roads are enormous! Walking isn't very fun here ! There's cool parts of these cities, but as in this picture, there's a lot of boring monotony, huge ass roads, and even with the subway its still rough getting around. These cities aren't designed for humans, they're designed for cars.

One thing that gives me a different feeling when visiting London is, skyscrapers and buildings are densely packed, connected by narrow roads, but traffic is still working good. While in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, where I come from, buildings are spread alongside the avenue with 6 lanes or more, but they're always jammed. Sometimes it's really confusing to find a way cross the road. Usually old town is more pedestrian-friendly, but the traffic in my country is definitely not something I would appreciate.

Induced demand doesn't really apply to housing, because housing and roads are fundamentally different.
Most roads are free for drivers, or at least their costs are hidden (paid via obscure taxes) or subsidized (you pay tolls, but they aren't the full cost of your use of the road). And even if you pay the full cost, it's still a very modest fee per use.
But when you buy a house, it's a major investment, usually the largest single purchase you make in your life.
So if there's a new road and it doesn't cost you anything, you're likely to use it. It's there, it connects two places you want to go between, and it's free! But if there's a new housing development, you're not just going to say "I'll take one $1M condo, please!" just because it's suddenly available.

Personally I believe the housing crisis is a symptom of the wage gap. If firemen, teachers and maids (etc.) Didn't make so much less than tech employees fewer people would feel pushed out.
