Does the USA regret that it has fed China's growth for decades so now China has become its direct threat?

The USA exploited China’s cheap resource and labour so that Americans can live a better life than the Chinese. Without cheaper goods produced at lower cost from China, everything will be more expensive. American wages will buy less and quality of life would definitely be lower. So it is a bit rich to say that China and China alone benefited from this arrangement.
The current tariff war (if run long enough) will probably be in the long run a good thing for China and its citizens. It will be painful to find new sources of demand. But at long last, Chinese factories will be forced to produce goods for its own people. It won’t be as lucrative for sure since the power of the Chinese consumer is nowhere near that of the American consumer. On the other side, the US consumer will have to get used to buying less. Probably a good development.
If not China, then somebody else.
The US will automatically view any new powerful entity as a threat (or at least a strategic competitor). Just look at the EU now. For many years Britain tried to smother the newly formed USA. I wouldn’t be surprised if the US attempts to smother any new would-be challengers just like Britain so many years ago. With the rise of Trump-style politics, the USA will always be looking for enemies. And sad thing is, they will find what they are looking for.

How do you think Britain tried to smother the USA? That’s a new one.

So what was the alternative?
Keep China poor and angry? So what happens if China starts to growth despite US opposition. Are you going to nuke Beijing.
China is much less of a threat to US interests now than it was in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and it is simply not a practical US policy to keep China weak and poor forever.

Every action has some reaction.
Nixon and Henry Kissinger woke up the sleeping giant China in the 70’s to try and sideline the USSR further during the cold war and the Americans must now surely be regretting that.
Trump is the face of this regret.
