In case if you haven’t been to China, they have a social media chat app called “WeChat” it’s basically WhatsApp for China but it’s got a built in digital wallet. You can top up money manually, credit card or bank transfer. You can pay for stuff almost everywhere, the random dude selling some grill meat on the side of the road will have a wechat qr code for you.

How come this never took off elsewhere?

Eesh, I don't even trust Facebook with my social media, let alone my money.
I'd rather a card company like Visa or MasterCard did it.

Glad you don't have to use WeChat then. Tencent is argueably worse than facebook.

And we think Facebook has awful privacy now, imagine if it becomes like WeChat. Seeing what stuff goes in in China should be motivation for us to pressure Facebook more.

Yeah whats scary is that our government is in the pocket of the corporations. All these second amendment folks talking about taking up arms against the government, but the real folks screwing us over are the CEOs in the board rooms.. Mr. Robot shit, basically.

Shame that nobody in their right state of mind uses facebook then.

Chinas government props up specific businesses. They choose who can compete and who cant. Also daily life in China is dealing with a bunch of small shops etc.. going to the market and what not. Its much different than your daily food and product shopping in the US. Those are perfect businesses for wechat. They don't need to get a device or anything. They have a piece of paper with their QR code on it and they can accept money through it.

shopping in china is not really much different than the US. There a lot of small shops but there are just as many big box stores and large shopping malls. It is the low fees vs credit card readers that causes it to be more widely used in china. Paypal has QR code payment in europe they just dont do it in the US

I have wechat to talk to my Chinese coworkers when I'm in china on business or the like but it legitimately is a privacy concern and I use it as little as I can. Everything on it goes right through the government.

Yea like they specifically go through every single call. What are you so paranoid of?

It also helps that privacy just isn't a thing there, so companies aren't leery of giving access to data such as your payment info to someone else. Especially in China.
Be careful what you wish for.
