You know, I'd be okay with it, if they actually used the majority of the shark. Like they killed it, took it's meat, used all reasonable parts for it, and the fins went off for this other practice. Then it basically becomes like regular fishing.
But when they just take the little pieces they want and throw the rest away...that I have a problem with.

如果他们把整只鲨鱼都利用起来，那我没意见。比如杀死鲨鱼，吃鲨鱼的肉，能用的都用，再拿走鱼翅作他用。那就和一般的捕捞没啥区别了。可是他们只是拿走那一小块鱼翅，然后剩余的都扔掉。这我就看不下去了。

You’re right. I think if people ate the entire shark I wouldn’t have a problem with it. But the fact that they only take the fins, and just lob the body back into the ocean is disgusting

Eating domesticated livestock that are killed humanely (who wouldn't be alive if not for humans rearing them) is hugely different to cutting the fins off wild, endangered animals then releasing them to die a slow and painful death.

I used to raise livestock when I was younger. I know it is different but a death is a death. Humane is always the best thing of course. But even then I would love to challenge people who eat meat to kill and butcher at least one animal. We have this huge disconnect whether it be shark fin soup or chicken tenders and where our food comes from. With little personal association bad practices can continue.

Hmm, that suggests if you facilitate something's coming into existence you have the right to kill it. Could probably find some wacky ends following that rule.

That's something i can't get over. China is a country that eats every part of every animal, but the shark gets the raw deal of being used for a singular part.

I think most people doesn't even know how shark fin is harvested. They just know it is some delicacy that rich people ate. Hence why couple of years ago Yao Ming made a big effort to educate people and it helped with demand.

Exactly, if the perception of shark fin is lowered as a luxury, then the rich no longer care for it and regular masses no longer want it for banquets and weddings. I remember when a lot of Chinese restaurants used to parade expensive fins in their display cases. Now, even the older, more old-school folks talk about how it is tasteless and garbage. That's positive change I can get behind.
Now if only that would work for ivory, where the unfortunate endangerment and extinction of a species only drives the rarity and demand upward...

是的，如果人们不再把鱼翅当做奢侈品，那么富人就不会再去吃，普通人也不会在宴会和婚礼上提供鱼翅。我记得以前很多餐馆都会展示昂贵的鱼翅。现在，即使更老的保守的一些人都觉得鱼翅没什么味道，完全是垃圾。这是一个积极的变化。
如果人们也这样看待象牙就好了，大象的濒危使得象牙更加稀有，推升了需求。
