There's a common saying in China, “People only see the theif eating meat, but don't see him getting beaten.”

泻药，中国有句话，“只见贼吃肉，不见贼挨揍。”

The same applies here. Many locals look at the quick success of Chinese newcomers and wonder how did they do it when the answer is hidden in plain sight: they take more beating.

同样的道理。很多当地人看到新来的中国人快速取得成功，想不通为什么中国人这么厉害，可是答案其实就在他们眼前：中国人挨了更多的揍。



Chinese newcomers thrive because they are more hard working.

这些新来的中国人之所以成功是因为他们更加勤劳。

When locals go party, these Chinese newcomers are probably still attending customers.

当当地人去参加派对时，这些中国人可能还在服务客户。

When locals dine out, they eat leftovers.

当当地人出去就餐时，他们吃剩饭。

When locals sleep in their beds, they sleep on the floor in a storage.

当当地人睡在自己的床上时，他们睡在店里的地板上。



For the first time in their life they move to another country - maybe to be with their teenage student offspring, or just to advance their opportunities and get on in life.

当中国人第一次搬到一个国家时，可能是和自己的小孩一起去的，为了寻找机遇或者飞黄腾达。

Getting a job is hard when you barely speak the language. And the job has limited hours at low pay.

当你不动当地语言时，找工作是很难的。而且为别人打工的话有时间上的限制，工资低。

On the other hand, I can sell something, perhaps even in a shop or just from my home on WeChat or whatever, and know that I can work as long and I like and make a living without the problem of the employer, the fellow staff, not speaking local language well, etc.

但是如果是自己开店，或者在家里做微商的话，想工作多长时间都可以，不用看老板和同事的脸色，当地语言说的不好也没问题。

So in short this is my observation from my friends in this situation.

总之，这是我对朋友的观察而得出的观点。



In fact many immigrant groups setting up small business like this are from global entrepreneurial diaspora communities. They excel in business and cannot even contemplate working for anyone else.

这或许解释了为什么那么多人愿意去非洲开办自己的小生意，对他们来说非洲提供的机会可能还更多。其实不仅是中国人，很多其他的移民群体也是如此。他们擅长做生意，不想为别人打工。
