Wonder how much profit you would have made if you had bought some land in downtown Chongqing back in ’98.

Famous Chinese joke.
After the terrific Cultural Revolution, you sell your house in 1979 for $1k because no one wants to be a fisherman forever. Get a fake passport and fly to Saipan, then smuggle to Guam in a puny draft in the middle of high seas.
You work as a dishwasher in a shady takeout place for a few years before being able to afford a trip in a container to SF or LA.
You find another Chinese restaurant, join a gang, and began your new life in dreamland.
You deal drugs and skim cards for another 10 years before meeting the daughter of local gang lord and develop a romantic relationship.
You evade cops and climb the ladder within the gang, all with your bloody hand and cold heart.
Eventually, you, at the age of 60, stand on top of the underground empire. Being no longer the young man who will do anything to escape a shithole, you decide to quit and enjoy your life. You return to China with $10m from your years of bloody life.
You find out that your old house, in the golden centre of Shenzhen, is now valued at $10m.

If you actually believe that property rights in China is violated left and right, I don't know what to tell you.
Sure, property rights in that Commie-land isn't as iron-clad as it is in the West, and you stand a higher chance of getting fucked over, especially if you are an ignorant peasant - but it isn't a lawless anarchy. If it was, Chinese economy would still be in the sewage instead of being a world-beating dynamo.

It’s weird to think about. The Appalachian mountain range is extremely old, and to have a river even older is bizarre to me for some reason.

If a river goes through a mountain range then you know the river is older than the mountains. So the rivers were there first and cut through the mountains as they were being uplifted.

Interesting fact about Chongqing (or not, I don't know what interests you), it's classified as a Municipality, or a direct-controlled city by the central government, on par with the three other major cities of Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Municipalities in China are administrative divisions equal to the provinces in China. It's kind of like if New York City or Los Angeles were their own states in the US, rather than being part of New York State or California.
Even though it's classified as being a city, it's pretty massive, almost as large as an entire province (Chongqing is #3 on the map, in the center).

It's interesting stuff, just found this article on it:
Apparently the largest "city" in the world is the size of New Zealand!
