So today the school had told us there was a fire drill scheduled for third period. No big deal. Third period comes the alarm sounds. I make my way downstairs to the first floor to be greeted by a cloud of smoke. My first reaction was alarm but the Chinese teachers seemed unfazed.

今天学校通知我们说会在第三节课进行消防演习。这没什么。到了第三节课警报响起。我跑到一楼，等着我的是一团烟雾。我的第一反应是慌张，但是中国老师却很镇定。



If there's ever a real fire we are screwed but at least the burning sensation of smoke inhalation in our lungs will be a familiar one.

如果真的发生火灾了，那我们就完蛋了，但是至少，烟吸入肺里产生的烧热感将不再陌生。

But we stood there each class in a single file line facing the stands where a dais was set up. There the headmaster was standing at a podium flanked by men and women in various uniforms.
The headmaster congratulated us on the successful fire drill and then he introduced the city Fire Chief.
The Fire Chief gave the typical speech about how with the help of the harmonious society blah blah blah fires would be no longer a problem.

Then as a reward for sitting through all that we were treated to an hour pyrotechnic display with the city's firemen showing off the latest in firefighting technology. Flamethrowers exploding propane tanks guys in shiny suits walking through 15 foot flames. It was fucking awesome.

"The smoke's getting in my hair" someone nearby says in the surrounding crowd that's at least 2.5 lines thick half of them smoking and she walks off to have a wechat session about her timesheet and how this was a waste of everybody's time.

因为对比起来我貌似没啥工作要做的，所以我能腾出时间参加演习。我亲眼看到大楼的保安在外面的停车场区成功燃起了一些树枝，然后在用灭火器灭火时操作却很渣老是出问题。“我头发给整得都有烟味了。”周边的人群中有人这么说道。至少有2.5列人站在一块，其中一半的人都在抽烟，然后她就离开人群走到一边就时间表的问题用微信跟人沟通，说这简直是在浪费大家的时间。

isn't this similar to the incident in America where they have a simulation of a shooter incident. one of the teachers was actually firing blanks in the corridor.

这个跟美国的那个事件很相似，只不过美国的是仿真枪枪击事件。其中一个老师在走廊里开的其实是空枪。
