A British high school has banned students from wearing Canada Goose, Pyrenex, Moncler, and other expensive designer coats in a bid to stop "poverty shaming."

School officials at Woodchurch High School in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, in North West England, sent a shocking letter to parents last week that said expensive winter coats would be prohibited from campus once students return from winter break (January 01).

"We are concerned with poverty proofing in school, where issues can routinely if unintentionally, stigmatize children living in poverty and contribute to the increasing cost of the school day to parents and carers. It has always been our policy to minimise the cost to parents and carers of uniform.

The decision was taken following consultation with representatives of the pupils themselves and has been welcomed by the vast majority of parents and carers who have responded to the letter," the spokesperson said.

Most of the Canada Goose jackets are usually spotted on celebrities or in the most frigid regions around the world, easily cost upwards of $1,000. Other designers banned from campus include Moncler and Pyrenex, whose winter coats cost equally as much.

Nobody For President
I was a poor kid, working minimum wage jobs after school and banking $20-$50 a week saving for college. Junior year started, a bunch of the guys standing around talking about all the cool stuff they did for summer, then someone mentioned their new broghes (shoes man, this was 1954) and everybody looked down. Maybe 8 guys, everybody had new shoes, except me. Nobody said anything, but my face burned.

Yup, started out poor in money and cloths but rich in a family of honest hard workers. Learned early on that if I wanted nice things I would have to work and earn them. 7 button oxford shirts with ferry loops on the back and Levis pants were what the posh in-crowd wore. By the time I could afford them I was no longer interested in them. At 6 years old my father had me building a road by hauling loads of gravel and clay 100 yards with a wheelbarrow. The lessons stuck and for my whole life I have seldom been out worked by anyone. Hard work, which includes reading hard books, can compensate very nicely for starting out poor.

Can I still get dropped off at school by my dad driving his Lamborghini?Or does he need to use the Ferrari or Porsche?

Back in the day it was actually considered a good thing for wealthy parents to have some modesty and not flaunt their wealth, especially via their kids.

Genuinely wealthy parents usually don't flaunt wealth - that's how they stay wealthy. Wannabes and pretenders do.

Wile-E-Coyote
"Wannabes and pretenders do"................ No, they flaunt their debt.

Canada Goose uses coyotes fur for the trim. My parents have a farm in the Niagara Region here in Ontario, Canada and coyotes are pests. Better to use the fur instead of just burying the coyote whole. I have one of these jackets myself. You wouldn't believe how warm and well insulated these jackets are. So warm, you could wear it without wearing a shirt and still be amply warm.

What's next, families will have to move out of a nice higher income area and their kids won't be able to drive anything considered expensive or parents won't be able to drop their kids off at school driving a Lexus or BMW? Great job of teaching kids the real world. Totally fucked up. Will be checking for high end runners, gym clothes, underwear, Etc.

Woodchurch where this occurred is a very big housing estate (projects in the USA). It has a reputation and people who don't live there don't usually go there unless they want their car stolen.

how will the other kids know who's father deals drugs, or who's mother is a prostitute?

If the left keeps this up the next in-vogue jacket will be one made from their pelt.

I get the idea here, and it's not "socialism." It's an attempt to ease pressure off the parents whose kids want to fit in by wearing expensive **** at a school where some kids come from wealthy parents, but who may not be quite as well to do. The last thing some middle class parent needs is their kid freaking out because he's going to be seen as lesser by his peers because his parents can't afford a $1000 coat.

Great video. Not surprisingly, the large majority of posters here are siding with the American Psycho view of this article.

Overpriced designer labels is more often a lower class thing. I went to two different schools in the fifth grade - one in a small town, very blue collar/redneck and the other was upper class suburban. The redneck town, kids were obsessed with the "right" clothes. The urban/posh school, the kids didn't give a crap. I know plenty of others with similar experiences.
