Hong Kongers may have noticed the bright yellow bikes that have been cropping up around the city in the past year or two.
But the yellow bikes may soon follow the green ones: Ofo is facing its imminent demise shortly after Gobee.bike announced its closure in July earlier this year.
Ofo a Chinese bike-sharing startup backed by Alibaba has had insurmountable cash flow problems for a long time: “in order to keep the company running we have to turn every renminbi into three” said Ofo founder Dai Wei in a letter to employees.
The bike-sharing industry was extremely hot in China during its boom with hundreds of millions of dollars poured into different startups competing for dominance of key cities. At the height of the mania the proliferation of brightly painted bikes around the city even became a slight social problem.
Now bike-sharing companies have become more subdued as the craze fades.
However it may not necessarily be doom and gloom for Ofo despite its cash flow problems: in August Didi Chuxing was reportedly interested in a joint boyout with Alibaba’s Ant Financial. The buyout would value Ofo at $2bn.

OFO bikes are wank. There's no way they can be sustainable if every bike breaks after two rides.
dooshemama
lol when I visited China I had to unlock like 5 bikes before I found a functioning one in Nanjing. Plus those bikes do make the city streets so ugly and dirty

Hope they clear up all their POS bikes before they fuck offf...
Polypinoon
Tl; dr: clear ponzi scheme falls apart while founder runs of with the money.
krang123
The weird thing is that Ofo actually appeared to be one of the most legit bike sharing companies out there.
There were some way seedier ones popping up seemingly every day last year.
dandmcd
Yep they had billions of dollars of backing by major investors and still managed to run the well dry. Pretty incredible crash and burn really. But if you ever rode an OFO bike you'd know the company couldn't last long trying to maintain millions of shitty bikes.
krang123
I have used Ofo in the past. It's certainly not a bike that I would have paid for but I mean... it was a bike that could be found just about everywhere given how ubiquitous they were.
bananainbeijing
Just curious why you think it's a ponzi scheme? They had a legit business albeit their bikes are pretty shitty
CockSlappinUinDaFace
They were in the business of snatching deposits faster than the competition not renting bikes. That's why most of their bikes are broken they are cheap devices to put a QR code in exchange of a deposit and then go looking for more funding because huge user base.

Bike sharing was touted as one of the original inventions by China where the whole world is following. Kind of embarrassing now.
CockSlappinUinDaFace
Mobike and Hello bike still operating. OFO was the worst right from the beginning.
Shitty bikes only made to snatch deposits faster than the competition
2gun_cohen
Now "Three New Inventions".
Loseryyy
Why embarrassing? Bike sharing itself isn't a bad idea.
captain_nicebloke
Someone posted on WeChat yesterday Ofo have converted people's deposits into user credits. Can't confirm as I never used Ofo. Can anyone here check on the app?
If true though it's basically no you're not getting your deposit back but you can keep using the rickety old bikes until you've whittled it away...
CockSlappinUinDaFace
There is an en masse deposit withdrawal request and huge queues at their Beijing offices. Somebody posted a screenshot about deposit withdrawal and it was queued as the 10th million in line. That's 2 billion yuan I don't think they have that kind of cash any more
captain_hug
True. I applied for a refund in the app earlier today and it's now up to almost 12 million. Don't think I'll be seeing that 99 yuan before I leave in two months :/
dandmcd
Yes it's true Chinese media has reported that there are millions of people waiting to get their deposits back. Stick a fork in 'em she's dead.
(译注:Stick a fork in 'em she's dead——俚语,对一个快死的人再踩一脚让他死的更快的意思)
Loseryyy
More than 10 millions of users and there are people like me who are too lazy to apply for deposit return.

I liked ofo bikes because they were generally taller. Now they're all fucked up.
dandmcd
Bluegogo was the best I miss those blue bikes. OFO's newer bikes had seat adjustment which was great but pretty much all that are left now are broken or stolen.
mookiept
Bluegogo still exists (at least in Beijing). They were acquired by Didi in January or so and I've been using them for months via Didi app.
drguid
I like them because at any moment they could fall apart and make you died.
The other day the one I was riding de-chained right when I was in the middle of crossing a freeway.

This sort of scheme might work in Europe Canada or other Western parts of the world where people (generally) have a social conscience and don't treat the public sphere as an outhouse. It's a sad testament to gullibility that so many investors were ready to invest when they talked about an IPO last year. Thankfully it didn't happen but it's also a reminder why China is facing a growing resentment over the lack of viable options for placing your money at a time when inflation is running 6-7 percent banks pay less than 1% in interest the housing market is overcooked already and tough restrictions exist regarding sending money abroad. I know we've predicted a huge crash for years but as things stand and looming questions over China's economy emerge housing or stocks or both do look seriously at risk of a meltdown.

[This sort of scheme might work in Europe Canada or other Western parts....treat the public sphere as an outhouse.]
Lol keep telling youself that. People in Australia and Britain were throwing them into rivers. Get off your high horse.
westiseast
The Manchester mobikes were thrown in canals and the scheme had to stop. By contrast the London scheme has been running for about a decade under private/public joint management and is highly successful without all the nonsense you’ve seen from Chinese schemes.

[This sort of scheme might work in Europe Canada or other Western parts....treat the public sphere as an outhouse.]
So is Manchester the US and France not part of the western world? Two companies had to exit two of those regions because of vandalism and theft. /u/themediumpanda is just being a racist idiot with his superiority complex. Humans arent good enough for dockless bikes.
BillyBattsShinebox
Europe and especially the UK has WAY more vandals than China does. Stuff in China breaks because people just treat things badly and generally don't give a shit but there's very rarely any malicious intent behind things. The UK on the other hand is absolutely full to the brim with complete and utter cunts who just break things because they're complete and utter cunts.
CockSlappinUinDaFace
This doesn't work in Europe. Europe has vandals as well. Docked bikes work you swipe the dock the bike is released you ride it and then return it to another dock station where they are easy to retrieve for maintenance or send them to a higher demand location no chance to leave them in shaddy areas. The ones sponsored by Barclays in London are built like tanks.
marmakoide
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A9lib%27
It's been working in Paris since 2007. Vandalism is a problem (2 millions euros/years lost to it) but not enough to stop the scheme. It's not running for a profit it was a city council initiative that is privately contracted.
FileError214
The shared bikes in America were a real flash in the pan. Now it’s all about these goddamned scooters. Only homeless people ride (presumably hacked) Ofo bikes.
Eat_the_Path
How many bike share companies is that now? I'm pretty sure it's not the first and they've all started the same way so it won't be the last. They get big investments at startup produce a billion bikes dump them everywhere and hire some thugs to vandalise the competition. Repairing bikes is hard so they just end up in a massive pile and not enough money can ever be made.
ponyplop
The problem isn't the bikes themselves it's the tools who use/abuse them hoard them in their apartment complex and put personal locks on the damn things.
