I had an offer to teach English in China from a company that would arrange housing and pay airfare. Everyone I talked to said you make more than Doctor's in China make, and can enjoy an excellent standard of living. It can get much, much better if a wealthy family pays you to privately tutor their children, which seems to be common.
We were maybe an hour of discussion away from packing our family up and moving to China about 4 years ago. Very glad that didn't happen.

I've had three family members teach English in China and they had a great time and returned home just fine after a few years of doing it. I don't think they made more than doctors or lived in luxury but there wasn't any kind of human rights abuse or anything like that.

Literally any white person who speaks English gets made these offers. You can make a bit of money doing these gigs but they are complete dead end jobs and you will feel like you are wasting your life if you spend more than a year doing so. Also in general, Westerners don't usually get detained in China unless the do something stupid, anything anti-CCP . If you aren't an idiot, you would be fine .

I have a friend who was working there, and he was making 70,000 USD a year + on the side tutoring a young man from a wealthy family in private, and said most of the white male teachers get similar results. That's not really a dead-end.

Its very dead end. You can easily make 70,000USD a year in cities like Shanghai if you are just a random white person but thats it. No job progression, no career ladder, no change in your duties and 70,000USD is the max you'll get as a teacher.

70k is way more than what most people make in the western world. Couple that with a low cost of living in China, you can live like a king, travel often, and in general live a pretty fulfilling life. Hell, you can even settle down with a nice Chinese woman and have a family.

My brother is a well qualified Teacher and he makes a fortune. He married a local woman and they set up their own school in Shenzhen. If you can get in with the locals you're all set.

You can find a company willing to give you a similar deal teaching in China within a week if you start looking. You do have to be white though.

It is a bit aggressive, but let's face it, teaching English abroad really isn't a long term career for most. But the point remains that as a teacher you're pretty much a nobody and certainly the CCP isn't wasting their time to detain you. Why not detain a high level executive of say a Canadian company or heck even a US company if they wanted to make a statement? What about the thousands of engineers and businessmen traveling regularly to China for work? You think China will pass up those people first to detain a 20-something-year-old English teacher?

I'm not just talking about being arrested. I'm talking about being ostracized from local friends because the government starts to take a hard stance against Americans, or ending up having "issues" renewing my work visa, or having impromptu med screenings. Getting dropped as a tutor by wealthy and well-connected families because it's not fashionable to hire American's anymore, ect.

I chose to go work at Microsoft instead of going to China, true. It was the safer option, and I'm glad I took that path.

Sure it could be, and since you work at Microsoft, you also know that there's thousands of engineers and businessmen from your company who routinely travel to China.
