Ikea has issued a recall for at least 27 million chests and dressers that can easily tip over onto children, injuring or killing them, NBC News confirmed.
The furniture giant said Monday that after the three deaths of three children it is no longer selling its "Malm" series products because they "could be a danger," Ikea USA president Lars Peterson told NBC News.
"Please take them out of the room," Peterson said, adding that customers are eligible for a free repair kit to anchor the furniture to a wall. Refunds will also be offered.
The announcement comes after an anchor campaign last year — and amid staggering statistics: every 24 minutes, a child is sent to the emergency room by a falling piece of furniture or a television, according the federal government's watchdog agency, the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Every two weeks, a child dies.
"Children see something they're trying to get," commission president, Elliot Kaye, explained to TODAY last year. "They start to climb. The unit falls over."
among those to be killed by an Ikea Malm dresser was two-year-old Curren Collas. Two years ago, the boy's mother, Jackie Collas, went to his room to get him dressed. There, she found the dresser on the ground.
"I didn't see him anywhere, so I went over and kind of pulled everything apart," she said. "I saw the little top of his head trapped between the dresser" and the bed.
The dresser, Collas said, was not anchored to the wall.
"I never heard of that before," she said, adding that one of her "main goals right now is to just spread the word about anchoring anything that could fall."
In a statement to NBC News, Ikea said it issued the recall despite the anchor campaign, which resulted in the company sending out 300,000 kits.
"It is clear that there are still unsecured products in customers' homes," the statement says. "We believe that taking further action is the right thing to do."

So 10's of millions of dressers and 3 deaths equals a product recall. While cigarettes account for almost 500,000 deaths a year and they are allowed to go their merry way

If the item is topheavy, tall, on a soft surface...if you have kids in the house that might try to climb. glad i could help

Yes, or be a good parent and teach them to never climb furniture, any dresser can tip over, same with anchoring TV's, that has been common sense knowledge for decades. People are absolutely clueless and these small kids don't need giant TVs in their room. Especially the old tube types. Bottom line, the lady saying, gee whiz, kids climb furniture is a BS line. The parents let them and take no responsibility, the way of the world these days.

3 and 4 year olds are very reliable. They all consistently execute behaviors as taught. You are extremely naive.

Dressers have been around an awfully long time. Has something changed in their design to make this tipping happen? perhaps they are higher or the drawers are shallower?
We need an engineering analysis to determine what has changed. They didn't used to tip.

Dressers these days are are taller, shallower and lighter. Because of this when a drawer is opened the center of gravity shift is more significant. Add the weight of a child and you have an accident waiting to happen.

Yes, height vs weight. If you pull the bottom drawer out and stand on it will the drawer break or will the dresser tumble over?

So the answer is they made them cheaper (shallower uses less wood) and taller (makes them look like more value, while making them less stable).

I'm 67 years old and don't remember having the urge to climb up on the furniture when I was a toddler, but that might be because if there was something up on a "DRESSER", "CHINA CABINET" or what ever, I was told "NO" and if I continued to go after it the attempt was thwarted by a firm but loving whack to my backside! That was That! Also the furniture built back then (1950's) was made of real wood (not this cheap pressed wood crap they sell now) and you couldn't tip it over with a tractor because it was heavy as H**L

Wrong. I have a solid wood bookshelf. It sits on carpet. It could easily be pulled down on a kid. It is anchored to the wall to prevent that from happening. Go back to sleep Gramps.

One would think anchoring tall furnishings is just common sense, specially one that can become top heavy. Little kids, with more reason.

The kid pulls out the bottom drawer, or two, and then stands on the drawer like a step. My daughter did that on a five drawer unit that towered over her, lucky for her she was able to get out of the way when it started to fall back on her.

It's easy to spot the dangerous dressers - they have looks that kill. From now on I'll inform them IKEA recalls them. They'll be flattered.
