A Chinese physician who spent almost 100 days in jail for criticising Chinese traditional medicine has issued an apology for “not thinking clearly”.

Tan Qindong an anaesthesiologist in Guangzhou emerged as a public hero earlier this year for going up against a traditional Chinese medicine company over its marketing of a tonic to Chinese retirees. He was detained for three months before being released on bail in April in a case that sparked outcry among Chinese doctors and the general public.

Hongmao Pharmaceutical the maker of the tonic said in a statement on Thursday it is dropping its lawsuit against Tan. The doctor published an apology earlier on Thursday for “not thinking clearly” about the words he used in a December essay describing Hongmao’s tonic as “poison”.

“After research our company decided to accept Tan’s apology. At the same time our company withdraw the case from Liangcheng’s public security bureau and withdraw the suit from People’s court in Liangcheng county” Hongmao said referring to the county in Inner Mongolia where the company is based.

In Tan’s December essay which circulated widely on the social media platform WeChat Tan cautioned that the curative abilities of Hongmao’s tonic’s were unclear at best and could actually harm those with diabetes or high blood pressure.

Hongmao’s “medicinal liquor” contains more than 60 kinds of herbs and animal products. It is advertised as a cure for everything from rheumatism to kidney dysfunction joint pain and Alzheimer’s disease.

China’s traditional Chinese medicine industry is growing with support from the central government even as it has come under scrutiny from researchers.

Tan’s case is also a rare win for public opinion and criticism of close lixs between local police and businesses. Tan was detained at home and taken more than 1700 miles to Inner Mongolia. He was charged for violating a little-used part of China’s criminal code that bars the fabrication or spread of claims that seriously damage a company’s reputation. But a Chinese court ordered his release.

After his release Tan told Caixin a Chinese financial news publication he did not regret writing the article or going to prison “It taught me how to interact with all sorts of people and also taught me how precious freedom is. I’ve learned to cherish the present ... I suppose this was just one of life’s trials.”

Still Tan appears to have suffered from the experience. Last week his mother posted on the microblog Weibo that Tan was suffering from PTSD and had been hospitalised.

It’s not even like he was bashing TCM in general. He was just saying that a particular company’s claims about their infused baijiu curing Alzheimer’s was not true. Poor guy.

A lot of powerful people are getting mad rich off TCM and most hospitals in China are pretty much funded by scamming people with IV drips and TCM in addition with real medicine. It's amazing how in China even fairly intelligent people believe things like the five body and chi.

Most people argue that TCM works more slow cures by the root cause and supports good health. The only thing TCM will do is kill you slowly because most of the herbs are laced with heavy metals causing slow permanent and eventually fatal kidney and liver damage. A healthy lifestyle doesn't require all kinds of capsules and herbs - it only requires regular exercise and sufficient protein fat vitamins and minerals.

Also nowadays a lot of TCM capsules are mixed with antibiotics ( yay for antibiotic resistance ) and pain relievers to make people believe they have genuine effect. It's quite shocking how many children end up in ER here because of opioid toxicity from getting huge doses of specific TCM concoctions.

No he was not. Because if you bash TCM in general no one gives a shit and no one can be bothered to sue you. Westerners are not the only population dismissing TCM. Shit tons of Chinese hates TCM too and they're very vocal about it. It was exactly because he's name-calling one particular (powerful) brand that got him in trouble. TCM shouldn't be the main focus here. It's a defamation case that went out of control.

The food/health neuroses are one of the things I find most annoying about Chinese culture. I mean you go out in a group to a nice restaurant and always going to be someone who's like "I can't eat anything with some common ingredient in it because of some pseudo medical reason" or like you go to a seafood restaurant and they can't eat seafood because they had a runny nose 5 days ago. I can't imagine going through life being so paranoid about everything I mean human's aren't that sensitive otherwise we surely wouldn't have been able to survive in the wild for millions of years if woman were dropping dead when they had some cold water during their period or eating lamb after you stubbed your toe caused you to get ill. It's so pervasive in society that even doctors will give you non-medical advice presented as medical advice as the guy above mentioned.

You have to put your foot down at some stage I guess. I was probably more amiable with the weirdness before my kid and just ignored some of it. When it involves a child and going against medical advice I think you need to take a stand. I told MIL that I valued her opinion but that it was up to me and my wife to decide whats best for the kid. I made sure I talked to my wife about this beforehand and also about the importance of following medical advice from doctors even when it contradicts what her parents are saying. I also don't let arguments continue eternally after a few back and forths I'll say that I've made my decision and that's final. It is painful but necessary unless you want to have no decision making power in the way your child is raised.

This is a pretty common advice for pretty much all illnesses in China. A misunderstood cultural difference I think. The reason why they asked you to stop eating spicy food is essentially the same as stop eating overly sweetened or salted food. Or anything that's regarded as stimulant. Spicy food in this case might not make much difference for your broken toe but it does induce irritation and can potentially slow down the process of healing (if you consider how it affects your digestion and sleep). What your doctor gave was a harmless advice.

After reading the whole story on Chinese media I've got to say that this whole story gave me renewed confidence that sometimes truth wins in China. The story as it's portrayed in Chinese media basically states that this doctor appalled that this TCM was being promoted openly to the elderly despite being full of toxic ingredients wrote an article about it blaming the company. The article went pretty much unnoticed save by the company that went to their local police in Inner Mongolia to file a complaint for libel. The police probably more than eager to help one of the biggest companies in their county (and guanxi etc.) went all the way to Guangdong were the doctor live and brought him back with them to put him in jail. Let me tell you he didn't enjoy his stay there... Anyway it backfired massively the media got hold of the story and now literally everyone in China knows about it and how dangerous the product is. The doctor got freed and I'm ready to bet there'll be serious consequences for the bad guys in the story. A bit of justice porn there and refreshing to see no censorship got in the way.

Also "China’s Food and Drug Administration [has] ordered its regional branch in Inner Mongolia to review all regulation violations made by Hongmao over the past five years" (CCP talk for "you guys are in for a hard time").

Careless wording on my part: He was grilled for 12 hours (not sure if that involved kidnapping him again from Guangzhou); it broke him because he was then admitted to hospital suffering a panic attack or what you will. Anyway two days after the article Tan apologized for his original blog calling the liquor toxic (all of which was factually true). So it seems he caused the cops and company so much embarrassment that they decided to put the major frighteners on him even though they had already been censured by the PSB and FDA. A bizarre turn of events all round

There is a lot of controversy about the efficacy of Hongmao Liquor. Consumers have experienced discomfort or complaints after drinking.

The TCM that focuses on plant and herbal remedies seems to have a far better track record than the nonsensical branch that focuses on animal parts (sexted no doubt via some idiotic voodoo-esque idiocy).

You see a similar trend in aromatherapy in the West. Some marketers focus on the limited scientific knowledge we have about the properties of the various ingredients and our knowledge of how scents can effect moods - and this stress and blood pressure. Others go down the path of spirituality and ascribe quasi-religious attributes to various oils.
Unfortunately for both China and the West there is a thriving market for such stupidity.
