Football: Heavy rain turns stadium into'bathtub'

Uninterrupted rainfall has caused afootball stadium to flood so much the goalposts are under water and it nowlooks like nothing more than a giant swimming pool.

Heavy storms in the city of Ezhou, inCentral China’s Hubei Province, have inundated the streets with water and havecaused serious disruptions to public transport.

Reports said it is the first time in 30years, since the stadium’s completion, that it has ever been flooded, withwater covering the pitch and even reaching above the goal at either end.

This makes no sense, who would build astadium without a drainage system of some sort for the field?

It's been reported that the ancient Romanswould flood their "stadiums" during their more extravagantgladiatorial games to reenact their famous naval battles/victories. It's evenbeen purported that they would fill the flooded stadiums with crocodiles andhippos to enhance the bloodletting, and to discourage recalcitrant participantsfrom "jumping ship" and giving up on the naval battles too easily. Nomovie portrayal of Romes' games do justice to how spectacular, over the top,and blood thirsty they really were. Blockbuster movie budgets (as big as theyare) and modern sensibilities wouldn't allow for it. Some of those games lastedfor months at a time, and were so extravagant as to drain even the emperor'spurse.

I might suggest that the designers of thestadium have it pointed out to them that some kind of drainage system mighthave been beneficial in the planning, and construction of this stadium! Whatidiots!

This is a major design flaw, which I amsure was done to save money. The stadium should have been built with stormdrainage which would have prevented this situation. This is a perfect exampleof lack of building codes or enforcement.

That much water could cause seriousstructural damage to the foundation, possible resulting in a breech that wouldrelease that water all at once, further worsening the situation.

Last night I assembled and installed a barndoor that was made in China.
If the guy who wrote the directions for thedoor had anything to do with the construction of that stadium, I can sounderstand how this happened.

Uh, maybe someone can open an exit door? Ordon't those stadiums come with 'em?

considering that the street outside islower than the water and relatively dry, this seems like it was intentionallydone. The roman coliseum used to do the same thing to enact naval battles.

You would think that the stadium, or anystadium for that matter, would be equipped with a drainage system, but it isChina so I guess that is asking to much.

"A rescurer carries a man tosafety." Spellcheck might help along with a visual inspection showing itis a boy and not a man.

They'll probably just dump the watereventually. Better idea---California could use that water. How about importingit to us for free?

The Roman Colosseum was able to be floodedovernight for mock sea battles in the morning; then, "drained," fastenough; so, they could clean up the destroyed naval galleys, haul off the dead, and stage normal gladiator fights, execute criminals and politicians listed asenemies of the state and the emperor, and feed Christians to the lions the nextday. Funny how the Romans knew enough to put efficient drain systems intoarenas almost two thousand years ago; but, the Chinese, that like to copyeveryone else's ideas; make something look the same; but, somehow, it fallsshort of expectations.
