The US Navy just named the first carrier-based Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) the MQ-25A Stingray.

The Navy has been pursuing a carrier-based drone since 2006 — first as a long-range stealthy bomber then as a surveillance and strike craft and finally as a flying tanker. Though air-to-air refueling is hardly a breakthrough having a carrier-based tanker provides the Navy with a possible solution to one of their most pressing problems — anti-access area denial (A2AD).

For instance China's famous DF-21D "carrier killer" ballistic missile has a range of about 810 miles. The US's longest-range carrier-based aircraft only have a range of about 550 miles which forces the US to either operate carrier-based aircraft outside of their effective range or risk bringing an entire carrier with 6000 sailors and about 70 aircraft within range of the DF-21D.

Somehow I don't see this as any kind of a defense at all against a ballistic missile. I'm no weapons expert but I see no connection whatsoever between a stealthy fuel tanker and a missile that travels many times faster than the speed of sound. I think the US has real defenses against this missile but this is not it. I think the writer doesn't know what he is talking about which is very typical for this so called "Business Insider" that never talks about business but usually has a click bait headline with a military subject. What about the rail gun? Now that might have been a better choice to write about in this instance. That sucker is a real weapon defencive and offensive

Unmanned drone the size and potential payload of a fighter that they are planning to eventually upgrade to an autonomous operation. This won't stop an incoming Chinese ICBM but it will fulfill the AI Skynet part of the terminator story. Seems like they are just wanting a new toy to play with since the Navy got bored with all the older stuff. Wouldn't the strategy be to move attack submarines within cruise missile range to destroy these "carrier killer" missile launchers and SAM sites and move the carriers within range to launch F-18's or if they ever get it working right the F-35's to bomb more important targets?

We should build enough of these things to have at least a couple of squadrons' worth on each carrier in the fleet. Turn them into "bomb trucks" and send them to bomb ISIS. These would be ideal because we wouldn't have to worry about losing any of our pilots if they get shot down or have an engine flame out over hostile territory. There isn't a place on Earth that we couldn't utilize these and our potential enemies should think twice because we won't be worried about risking a few unmanned drones. Pure WIN-WIN for us.

I hope this isn't another F-35 fiasco. Over-hyped under-performing killing machines are not the way to instill confidence in the citizenry.
Obviously as a true patriot I'd prefer to believe my own country's propaganda over another but my suspension of disbelief has its limits.

The Nav doesn't have tanker planes anymore? Wow. That's a major screw up. Those drones won't carry nearly as much fuel as the KA-6s they had back when I was in the fleet and drones are notorious for crashing.
But hey! It's stealth! So what if it causes more than a brand new collection of KA-6s? We are blowing billions on things that will not work and abandoning things that have not only worked but been incredibly resilient. SMH.

This has the feel of a technology developed to try and head off the obsolescence of the traditional Navy supercarrier. The idea of defense via an expensive and human resource intensive umbrella of piloted aircraft appears to grow ever less viable over time.
